Short answer: If you have time YES.
A Partner referral, if you think you can get it, is fantastic.
Of course, it takes time. So, if your timeline is short OR you're time poor (i.e. case prep to do and other firm networking to do) OR you've tried for a while and no results, then don't.
But, a Partner referral is better than Associate if you can get it.

The more senior the referee, the better in terms of maximizing your chances of getting an interview. So if you think you would be able to get a referral from a partner, definitely go for that.

as Ian mentioned, if you have time, it is a good idea to go for a Partner referral / someone at least Manager-level.
Reality is that for most firms, the more senior the referral, the more it helps your chances to land interviews - esp if it's a Partner → most recruiters don't veto Partner guidance.
