Dear all,

I am a second-year PhD student at a non-target university in electrical engineering. My direction is about biomedical devices which actually means I need to learn almost every engineering but not deeply.

I am planning to switch my career path to consulting. However, I don't have any internships or work experience. I am trying to graduate in three and a half years, so I spent all of my time in the lab.

I applied to Mckinsey insight, but got rejected, and they put me into the keep-in-touch program. I am graduating in one and a half years. Mckinsey let me apply for full-time positions this June.

Does anyone know if I stand a chance to get into MBB under this situation? And does anyone think my background with biomedical devices can match the requirements of life sciences consulting in MBB?

Really appreciate for replying and helping!

Hello!

Yes, of course you have a chance! Probably what you are doing is harder than the McK interviews tbh, if you know how to prep for them correctly.

The key thing, now that your CV is in, is the prep:

1. FIT INTERVIEW

The "Integrated FIT guide for MBB" has been recently published in PrepLounge´s shop (https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/tests-2/integrated-fit-guide-for-mbb-34)

It provides an end-to-end preparation for all three MBB interviews, tackling each firms particularities and combining key concepts review and a hands-on methodology. Following the book, the candidate will prepare his/her stories by practicing with over 50 real questions and leveraging special frameworks and worksheets that guide step-by-step, developed by the author and her experience as a Master in Management professor and coach. Finally, as further guidance, the guide encompasses over 20 examples from real candidates.

You can see plenty of reviews from candidates who purchased it already.

Furthermore, you can find a Expert Article on PreLounge fully dedicated to Behavioural questions, one of the key building blocks of FIT:

In adition to that, you can find 2 free cases in the PrepL case regarding FIT preparation (motivational quesitons and Intro & CV questions:

Feel free to PM me for disccount codes for the Integrated FIT Guide, since we still have some left from the launch

2. BUSINESS CASE

You don´t have any more time to the classics of Viktor Cheng, "Case in point" book, etc. You need to get hands on asap:

1. Practice cases with partners asap, as many as you can do.Find experienced partners who can provide a good feedback

2. Practice your math skills, both in your cases and with ad hoc exercisess, such as:

1. Multiplying double digit numbers (you can find videos about this in Youtube, unfortunately we cannot post the link here but they are easy to find)

2. Leveraging math tools (Mimir math for iOS), Math tool on Viktor Cheng website to practice

Furthermore, you should practice as much as you can, and ensure that you cover:

1. Profitability cases- basic profitability framework.

2. Idea generation cases: for any specif issue

3. Growth cases: market penetration, new product launch, product mix change, etc.

4. Pricing cases

5. M&A cases

6. Valuation cases

7. Value chain cases

Given you are under this much time contraint, consider working with a coach to foster speed and ensure you have a tailored plan to be very targeted. PM me interested!

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

#1 BCG coach | MBB | Tier 2 | Digital, Tech, Platinion | 100% personal success rate (8/8) | 95% candidate success rate

Hi there,

I worked with people that were previously professional violinists, flautists, dentists, etc. Trust me, you can get into MBB!

However, there are a few things you need to do to improve your odds:

  1. Get some consulting-related experience (bro-bono consulting projects, academies, etc.)
  2. Network
  3. Adjust your resume and make it a 10/10 (change your wording etc. to change the way it's pitched)

Happy to help with all of the above!

Good luck!

I come from a similar background and am joining MBB soon. The answer is definitely yes. Being invited to “Keep in touch” by McK is a good sign you have a good resume despite having no consulting type experience. You need to

1) Network. Start with school alumni, then others with similar backgrounds in the offices you're interested in and secure referrals. This is also a good way to learn about consulting/MBB and demonstrate interest.

2) Prepare for case interviews, this takes time to get to a place where you're ready to interview so don't wait to start preparing until you secure interviews. Look for case partners that can provide good, constructive feedback. Preplounge is a good resource for this, as well as any local consulting clubs you have access to. Look up crafting cases for case prep. Don't forget preparing for fit interviews.

3) Also, network with and apply to tier 2/boutique firms (EY-P hires LS/Biomedical PhD students directly into their LS practice). There are several boutiques as well, including but not limited to, ZS Associates, Clearview Healthcare, Health Advances, Putnam, Trinity, LEK consulting, Simon Kucher etc.

If you have access to a consulting club in your school or elsewhere, that's a great place to start. This may seem intimidating, but it's very doable. Good luck!

Hello,

Like the other experts mentioned, yes!

I suggest you check out specific hiring progams for advanced degrees. BCG has a program called “Bridge to BCG” and a specific recruiting channel for advanced degrees. Bain has a program called ADvantage offering week-long internships in North America for advanced degree candidates.

Best of luck!

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Hi there,

Based on your description, it doesn't sound impossible, but it's also not very likely.

If you come from a good school and have a good track record with a proven interest in consulting that can maximize your chances.

But practically, what i would do if i were you, is to figure out if you could get an internship or short-term engagement in some sort of consulting-related entity. It could be an internship with a smaller consulting company or it could be being active in the consulting club at the university. The whole point is to show that you going full-time into consulting has some sort of continuation from your current interests and it's not totally random.

BCG 1st & Final Round interviewer | Personalized prep with >95% success rate | 7yrs coaching | #1 for Experienced Hires

Hi there,

Generally speaking, can say the following..

  1. PhD - attractive to any consulting firm
  2. Non-target school - not ideal, but not a deal-breaker. If profile is strong, polished CV and networking will help
  3. Engineering - very sought after by consulting firms, as engineers often perform very well on the job (their quant acumen and structured way of approaching problem helps a lot)

That said, feel free to share your CV via PM - will be happy to provide very specific advice.

Cheers, Andi
