Hello, I am from Brazil and I identify as non-binary. I would like to apply to some consulting firms. I had some experience in some selection processes in the past but I've never felt safe or that my identity was being fully respected or embraced.

In 2024, I will try again and I would like to ask a few questions:

1) How are consulting firms actively promoting an inclusive and supportive environment for transgender and non-binary employees, and what specific initiatives or policies are in place to ensure their well-being and professional growth?

2) In the context of diversity and inclusion, how are the firms addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by transgender individuals?

3) Are there any measures being taken to educate employees at all levels about transgender issues?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi Vicgo!

I actually wrote a piece precisely on this here:

Let me also take your questions one by one:

1) How are consulting firms actively promoting an inclusive and supportive environment for transgender and non-binary employees, and what specific initiatives or policies are in place to ensure their well-being and professional growth?

Consulting firms are proactive in creating equality of opportunity at the start of the funnel. So they actively reach out to diversity candidates and organise events specifically for them so they better understand how the firm works and how the recruitment process is meant to go.

2) In the context of diversity and inclusion, how are the firms addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by transgender individuals?

You'd need to be more specific here so I can also be more specific. What do you mean by ‘unique challenges and opportunities’? Also, feel free to ask recruiters this question directly. They have the most up-to-date understanding of what the firm is offering for diversity candidates.

3) Are there any measures being taken to educate employees at all levels about transgender issues?

Yes. There is actually quite a lot of training of inclusivity within consulting firms and there's been significant progress in the last few years in this space.

If you're now thinking about applying for consulting roles, you might find the following guide helpful:

Good luck!

Hi Vicgo,

1) How are consulting firms actively promoting an inclusive and supportive environment for transgender and non-binary employees, and what specific initiatives or policies are in place to ensure their well-being and professional growth?

In general, most are making a strong effort. Many have programs and policies in place. This will range across countries and firms, of course. It's important to research each firm specifically, and, importantly, speak to people at each firm to see what the culture is like.

2) In the context of diversity and inclusion, how are the firms addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by transgender individuals?

This is a bigger question and, again, it's going to vary highly across firms and across countries. It's an excellent networking question by the way!

Also, remember that the most important thing is doing the job/work right. If you can demonstrate that you are highly capable and get the job done, that's the most important!

3) Are there any measures being taken to educate employees at all levels about transgender issues?

From what I have seen, these firms do try educate as best they can across a range of topics/groups including transgender, gay, bi, female, black, hispanic, immigrant, aboriginal, maori, native american, climate change, alcoholism, substance abuse, domestic violence, autism, ageism, ableism, antisemitism, etc.

Consulting firms tend to be amongst the most open and progressive on these topics, openly discussing / raising internal awareness.
