Just wondering if anyone has used management consulted case library for prep? How good are the cases and the example solutions?

Hello!

I don't have personal experience with it, unfortunately, so I cannot give you fist hand opinion.

Something tough I can tell you about PrepLounge's case library is that coaches who are active and in touch with the current consulting interview world publish cases constantly, and those are indeed good with a guarantee. Here I leave you the link of 4 cases that I have published here in the library. Another great thing is that, if you have any questions, you can reach out directly to the author!

A great thing about solving coaches´ cases, apart from them being very current, is that you can always reach out if you have questions or suggestions :)

Best regards,

Clara

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Hi there,

I've had a few candidates that said they used it but I heard no strong opinions from them.

The case library here on PrepLounge is also quite good and the filtering function makes it easier to look for the most relevant cases for you. You can also use the scoring system to figure out which ones are the high-quality cases.

The advantage here is that some of the cases published by coaches are actual cases from recent interviews, sanitised for confidentiality. Check out these two cases I wrote from McKinsey interviews this year HERE and HERE

Best,

Cristian

Hi there,

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for a lot of users, thus I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • I have not personally used the “management consulted case library” for preparation, and I do not see any necessity to pay for case studies when there are plenty of great free resources available. There are many websites, forums, and online communities (you are currently on one of them 😉) that offer free case studies for practice and preparation, and these can be just as effective as paid resources for helping you improve your case solving skills.
  • It is worth noting that the quality of case studies and example solutions can vary significantly, regardless of whether they are paid or free. Some resources may provide more comprehensive and well-written material, while others may be less thorough or of lower quality. It is always a good idea to do your research and read reviews or ask for recommendations from others before committing to any particular resource.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on what to do in your specific situation, please feel free to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

ex-McKinsey EM & Interviewer | 7/8 offer rate for 4+ sessions | 90min sessions with FREE exercises & videos

Hi there,

At the end of the day, all cases in case books are poor. The reason being that it's very hard to capture something that is a very dynamic conversation between two people in a couple of pages. This is especially true for the sample solutions, that typically tell you next to nothing about key skills that you must demonstrate during the interview.

To overcome this, I have developed a new format with very detailed sample cases (McKinsey-style) that I share with people I work with. The format is essentially a transcript between interviewer and interviewee with detailed skill assessment. For most people, this is usually a complete eye opener (especially those that don't understand the difference between McKinsey-style and all other firms e.g. BCG, Bain).

The best way to prepare is through interviews with experienced coaches and former interviewers that can help you become great at casing by showing the right skills, even when the case is poor.

Please let me know if there's anything I can help with!

Best,
Moritz

Hi there,

The quality of the cases varies a lot. Also, it tends to include mostly old-school types of cases (classic framework cases) rather than more creative and newer ones that are employed by MBB and others today.

I would look for up-to-date case books or go through high-quality cases here on PrepLounge.

Cheers,

Florian

I would use a mix of PrepLounge cases and a recent case book as part of your preparation. Don‘t focus too much on Case In Point or Victor Cheng stuff as this has been around for many years now and consulting firms have adapted the way they test candidates.

It also makes sense to do a mock interview with a coach at some point so you can calibrate on what to focus on more strongly.

I only ever used their monthly free cases but I wasn't very impressed. I much prefer casebooks, especially the ESADE Consulting Casebook (which you should be able to find on google).

Hello,

No, I haven't. What I would strongly recommend is the case library at CaseCoach and PrepLounge. Additionally, if you can get your hands on some Business School Case Books, then that too will be very helpful!

All the best!

Hi there,

I honestly haven't used it, but I would strongly suggest using either MBA casebooks or Preplounge cases (primarily those created by coaches)
