Hi everyone,

Recently received a good offer in Fintech strategy - good jump in comp

Thinking of accepting but worried I'm costing myself exit opps that will come at around 2+0 - I'm still analyst level as I didn't join from MBA.

Will exit opps improve in the next year or will the difference be negligible ? (Gotten a promotion already and am a strong performer, don't necessarily need to leave but happy to try something else)

ex-McKinsey EM & Interviewer | 7/8 offer rate for 4+ sessions | 90min sessions with FREE exercises & videos

Hi there,

I have seen BAs moving on to great things and APs moving on to not so great things… Your question isn't easy to answer.

ADVICE:
If I were in your situation, I would personally stick around for a bit longer until EM level. Especially considering that you're a high performer and have a good shot at getting there without ‘suffering’. However, that's just me personally and I am ignoring all other factors (see last point).

REASON:
There is a tendency for exit opportunities to become much more attractive with increasing seniority, of course. This is particularly true for EM level and above, where you will be regarded as a leader as opposed to a contributor. If you can see yourself sticking around until then, you will benefit from this for the rest of your career.

CAVEAT:
Seniority is just one variable in a multivariant equation and career success post-exit depends on a variety of things from your personal and professional life. I had to ignore that for the purpose of your question, but you certainly shouldn't.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Moritz

Congratulations on receiving a good offer in Fintech strategy! It's understandable that you are considering the potential impact on your future exit opportunities. While I cannot predict the exact trajectory of the job market, I can provide some insights based on my experience as a strategy consultant.

Typically, the longer you stay in a role, the more valuable your experience becomes, especially if you continue to perform well and take on increasing responsibilities. By staying in your current role for another year, you have the opportunity to deepen your expertise in Fintech strategy and potentially take on more challenging projects.

This additional experience can enhance your profile and make you a more attractive candidate for future opportunities. It may also open doors to more senior positions or specialized roles within the Fintech industry.

However, it's important to note that the job market is dynamic and can be influenced by various factors, such as industry trends, economic conditions, and market demand. While exit opportunities may improve over time, there is no guarantee of a significant difference within a year.

Ultimately, the decision to stay or explore other opportunities should be based on your personal career goals, interests, and growth aspirations. If you are happy in your current role and see potential for further development, it may be worth considering staying and leveraging the opportunity to gain valuable experience in Fintech strategy.

However, if you are eager to explore other industries or roles, it may be worth considering the potential benefits of making a move sooner rather than later.

I recommend conducting thorough research, networking with professionals in your desired industries, and considering the long-term implications of your decision. Consulting with a career coach or mentor can also provide valuable guidance in navigating this decision.

Remember, there is no one-size-fits-all answer, and what matters most is aligning your career choices with your personal and professional goals. Best of luck in making the decision that is right for you!

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Hi!

First of all, congrats!

In short, if you already got a promotion, that's great to have on your Cv.

But I'd recommend you stay for at least two years. Yes, the exit opportunities get better after the two year mark and that's mostly because recruiters will then assume that you fully absorbed the consultant toolkit.

Still, if you feel you got your hands on something really cool and feel energised about it, by all means go for it. Otherwise, stay a big longer.

Best,
Cristian

Top rated Case & PEI coach/Multiple real offers/McKinsey EM in New York /12 years recruiting experience

It depends on your risk profile and the attractiveness of the opportunity. 1+4 at MBB doesn't look that great but if you can present the fintech opportunity as truly a great one it may not matter.

Personally I would recommend at least 2 or more to get the full benefit of having worked at MBB

Ex-McKinsey Associate Partner | +15 years in consulting | +200 McKinsey 1st & 2nd round interviews

Hi there,

This is a personal decision. Here you have my thoughts on the limited context you shared:

  • Never take career decision solely based on salary (especially during your first professional years)
  • Logically, being a 2+0 or having and MBA will give access to better exit opportunities than your 1+4 tenure
  • The most interesting exit opportunities come from networking and not your tenure so the longer you stay in the MBB firm, the more connections you'll make

A coach can definitely help you here. Happy to keep talking about this in private, just send me a message.

Best,

Alberto
