I just finished a partner round interview (case + fit). Would appreciate some input on my performance as I know what is looked for in final rounds is different from what is assessed during first rounds:

Situation (Case):

1) The case was very un-common with no math. The Partner said he wanted to have a conversation.

2) The partner was consistently interrupting me ; cutting me short when I try to further develop my answers and kept on making me doubt my answers. (i.e. did not let me finish my structure; made think of another hypothesis…)

Aftermath:

1) Despite interruptions and doubts induced by the partner, I maintained composure and assertiveness.

2) I ended positively. Despite imperfections, I am proud of standing my ground without losing composure.

After the case I did some research and answered his prompt with more time and resources available. What I have proposed to him during the interview was not too far from what the research showed (→ key points were there).

Congratulations on completing your partner round interview. It sounds like you faced a challenging case with a partner who had a conversational approach and interrupted you frequently. It's not uncommon for partner rounds to be more challenging and for partners to test your ability to think on your feet and handle interruptions.

Based on your description, it seems like you handled the situation well by maintaining composure and assertiveness despite the interruptions and doubts induced by the partner. It's important to stay confident in your answers and not let the interruptions shake your confidence.

Additionally, it's great that you took the initiative to do some research after the interview and found that your proposed answers aligned with the key points from your research. This shows your commitment to continuous learning and improvement.

Remember, partner rounds are often designed to assess your ability to handle pressure, think critically, and adapt to unexpected situations. Even if the case didn't go exactly as planned, it's important to focus on the positive aspects of your performance and the skills you demonstrated.

Overall, it sounds like you handled the partner round interview well, and I wish you the best of luck with the outcome. If you have any further questions or need additional guidance, feel free to ask.

Hi there,

Unfortunately, we don't really know - because this is your version of events!

That said, based on what you've said, if you did what you said, then you've done well and stand a good chance for next round!

Love your two situation/case points. Anything can happen.

Oftentimes my candidates get frustrated when/if I interrupt them mid-case and if I give them a case they don't except (atypical) - but that's exactly what we should be preparing for!

Nice job keeping composure…continue to not try to predict things and continue to stay agile/adaptable in each interview :)

Hi there,

Sounds like a ’typical atypical’ interview, which is common among Partners. That being said, evaluation follows the same principle.

The case doesn’t surprise me and neither the interruptions and focus on hypotheses. As for how you handled yourself, it sound like you did well!

These changes in style sometimes throw people off. Also, when you’re used to the classic frameworking, you might not know how to form hypotheses (particularly important at McKinsey).

We won’t know for sure until the call comes but keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Hi there not sure where you got this from, but final rounds look for the same as prior rounds, just the style of partners conducting interviews may be different. Fingers crossed for you! Best, freddy

Hi!

It sounds like it went pretty well and in line with what one can expect from a senior interviewer.

Hope you get good news from them rather soon!

Good luck!
Cristian

I have no idea. The partner is testing your analytical capability (and communication) and what is you are describing is the process not the content.

As far as the process goes, all of that is normal, there's nothing unusual to it. So no concerns on that side. But what is critical is the content.

Thanks Pedro, Below is some content. The case was around how a new tech-like office space could impact a mining company. My initial hypothesis was first that employee productivity would improve through this new initiative translating in higher profitability. I was about to explain my buckets. He directly interrupted me and asked me if I have missed other areas/ hypothesis. I responded on the spot that this new office space would also impact the branding of the company (making existing customers trust the company more and attracting new customers from the buzz of this new space). He seemed to like that idea. In the analysis section we returned to discuss the initial hypothesis and also how could we measure the success of this new initiative; I told him we could measure it through employee morale; level of output (# of reports/ department; quality of our products; number of new clients…) and cost reduction (doing more with less). He drilled here “Okay how can we convince the CEO with this idea”. I said “We could benchmark to other oil and gas companies on what they did” I saw his face turn. In my head I was saying to myself that I reached this far; I am not letting go of this opportunity. I said we could have a pilot program of this new office space in the existing space; compare the productivity (with the KPIs I mentioned earlier) before and after and then go to the CEO.

The content sounds good. One adjustment I would make on the answer is on the focus on employee productivity. Labour cost is usually not a major driver of profitability for mines. Usually other costs (equipment, energy, chemicals) are more significant and, even more important, the rate at which you extract minerals is probably the single most relevant KPI for a mine. So if a mine with that center could either increase their throughput rate or reduce operational costs, it would be a major thing. The relevant flaw in your anwwer is that is it is not industry specific. The answer you gave could be applied to any industry. A great answer would consider MINING-SPECIFIC value drivers.
