Hi all,

I am in a dilemma and I hope someone can share their point of view and guide me.

I have an offer from Bain Dubai's office as a business analyst (I'm using Mckinsey's terminology to avoid confusion) and another offer from Mckinsey as an Associate in Riyadh's office. I know for a fact that I would be happier if I go to Dubai, but at the same time I don't want to be placed as a business analyst.

I tried to negotiate Mckinsey's offer to be based in Dubai, but unfortunately Dubai is out of question. I also tried to negotiate Bain's placement but they do not recognise non-MBA masters' Degree as worthy enough to place me as an associate (consultant in Bain's hierarchy).

What do you advise me to do? What would you do if you were in my shoes?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

This well and truly depends on what you are prioritizing: success vs. happiness.

McK is by far the more attractive offer and completely catapults your career.

That said, nothing is worse than hating your job when it takes up your entire life.

I try to steer away from biased advice, but here is my view of the world:

  1. We need to make decisions based on end state happiness. You should enjoy life and not sell yourself to a career (assuming you have financial stability). All things equal, I now lead a life where I choose the job I want.
  2. However, I have done my time. Have you done yours? Strategy consulting is rarely a “happy” job. If you're doing this job for pure fun/enjoyment you either don't know what you're getting into OR you're one of the minority that truly loves the work. If you're doing MBB to advance your career and your goal is to stay for 2 years then get out, you need to pick McK. Those 2 years won't be “fun” where-ever you go, so you may as well pick the best company. You can then do whatever you like later. Please note, this assumes that you will be able to get the job done and be effective even if you're in a place where you're not happy. If being in Riyadh will bring you down too much and affect your work, then it's a no-go…only you know what will happen here!

We all have to sacrifice and “suffer” for a bit to then succeed and sit on that later (i.e. short term pain for long term gain). You need to decide if NOW is that moment for you or not!

Hi there, congratulations on your offers. Which group that you interviewed with, you had a better experience and felt a deeper connection with people? The question that you are asking comes down to two criteria:

1. People (culture)

 2. Location

I personally prioritize culture (people) over any other factors because you spend most of your waking time with your coworkers.

Also, one other factor to keep in mind is a difference in salary between these roles

Good luck with your decision.

Hey there,

If you want to set yourself up for success, you will want to be able to focus 100% on the job. In other words, if there's anything outside your job that's preoccupying/bothering you, that can take away from your focus and harm your success.

If going to KSA creates too much negativity in your life (less happiness, family time, recreational activities, etc.) then you may not be set up for success at McKinsey - no matter how much you want it.

In Bain Dubai, you can work your way up to Consultant/Associate in a reasonable amount of time (and you'll be happier in the process). I don't really see the issue there, that's how most people have to do it. Seems like a good option to me!

Best of luck with the decision!

Dear candidate,

congratulations that is truly excellent. Both are great options. I would choose by happiness always and both are great firms. Go where you happy and just put in the few years extra time and then you are an Associate :), but a happy one. No point starting somewhere if you are not happy even if the position is better. Bain itself is great, so you'll be fine.

Best regards,

From your answer it is clear that being in Dubai is very important to you. In my opinion it is not worth being unhappy in Riyadh just for the sake of a title. You will not be able to focus on doing a good job if all you are doing is working at a company for Prestige. The lower title will really not matter in the long run but you will be much happier with a placement in Dubai.

Hello!

It truly depends on what the personal reasons are behind the fact that you would be happier in Dubai tbh.

Do you want to share a bit more on that?

Cheers,

Clara
