Hello everyone,

Before I start I will briefly explain my situation.

so I'm now on my final year of college majored in Civil eng. with a 3.7/4 GPA from a non-targeted school in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

My goal now is to pursue a career in mc, but Idk where to start so I found this MiM program from a well known universities such as LBS, INSEAD, ESSEC, ie and I haven't found which entry level for them in the MBB OR even in Strategy& or Kearney.

So my question now comes, is it worth it to invest this amount of money in those programs ? if not what can I do accept taking 3yrs of experience in my field and then switch.

I truly appreciate your help and thanks in advance

Hi there,

For a very serious life decision I do recommend you get a career coach.

We pay for doctor's to make sure we're not taking the wrong drugs (self medicating). Maybe consider investing in making the right decision by getting an experts advise (tailored advice, not just a quick Q&A).

You're making a decision that will alter your life, and you're paying a lot of $ to go to said school/degree. Why not take .001% of that school fee to make sure you're making the right choice?

Personally, I think an MBA is often (not always) the best bet if the goal is management consulting. MiM can work, but MBA is better.

I strongly encourage you to consider an MBA at a target school vs an MiM. Yes some people may get in but it's a very small percentage and they aren't target programs for recruitment for MBB.  For the most part they're large money making schemes for B schools looking to recruit candidates.

Hi there,

That's a great question and I like how you're thinking through the options.

I agree with Ian in terms of speaking with a professional about this. They might help you consider options you were not aware of, plus provide a thinking framework for you to take this decision.

Here are some of the alternatives for you to consider instead of a MiM (to increase your chances of joining the industry):

1. Doing an internship (ideally either in a consulting firm or somewhere where you can develop consultant-like skills)

2. Doing freelance work (where you can prove to have developed consultant-like skills)

3. Pursue online learning and qualifications (cheaper and good brand names can still help elevate your profile).

Best,
Cristian

MBA is statistically more effective at securing top management consulting roles compared to MiM. Plus, MBB in KSA could value a global MBA a lot more.

Given your background in Civil Engineering - it may not be easy to work for 3 years and then expect to be able to switch to consulting. An MBA from a target school should do the trick most likely.

However, final decision is yours. It is better if you engage a career counsellor or a coach to get highly personalised and one-on-one advice.

Hello,

I recommend doing a LinkedIn search of alumni of the programs you are interested in to see where they end up working. I would also recommend considering some MBA programs, as well as getting some initial work experience under your belt to bolster your resume.

Hi there,

Q: So my question now comes, is it worth it to invest this amount of money in those programs? if not what can I do accept taking 3yrs of experience in my field and then switch.

I would recommend the following:

  1. Look for a referral, optimize CV and Cover and apply now
  2. If it doesn’t work out, you can work for a few years, apply for an MBA and then join as Associate/Consultant

If you join after a MiM without work experience, you will most likely join as a new grad, so I don’t think it would be the best option if the only reason to do the MiM is to have another shot at MBB (it could make sense though if there are other reasons).

Good luck!

Francesco
