Hello Consultants,

I have been working in Mckinsey as a business analyst for the the past year. While I would never like to move, my fiance is relocating to the dubai office and currently there is no internal mobility allowed from my office ( I tried several times)

Bain Dubai is recruiting  next month. Do you think I should apply? Do you think they would be inclined to hire me? ( or is it frowned against). Do i expect the same level of interviews considering that I’ll be joining an entry level as well? Anyone been in a similar situation

I would love your advice here.

Hi there!

I feel you.

I also considered moving offices at one point and it turned out to be more difficult than when I got hired in the first place.

In short, if it's important for you personally to move to Dubai and McKinsey is not facilitating it, then apply for jobs with other consulting firms.

It's not frowed upon. You can be very open about this in the interviews with the other firms as well.

What I would recommend however is making sure that you apply broadly. Meaning, have several firms that you target in Dubai, not only Bain. Regardless of your prep, things can always go wrong, so it's best to diversify a bit about it here. You can read more about it in the following guide:

Aside from this, network with a few people in your target firm x office combination. I've been hearing from multiple people that Dubai and Saudi Arabia are taking fewer and fewer non-nationals at junior roles. So it's best to know what you're getting yourself into before starting the process.

All the best!
Cristian

Yes, I can tell you from my own example: this is possible.

In fact, this is pretty similar to why I joined McKinsey, after two years at BCG: at that time, BCG did not have offices in the geography where I wanted to work. But McKinsey had. So my case was clear. You can also be very open about this.

Cheers, Sidi

Hi there,

1) Bain Dubai is recruiting next month. Do you think I should apply?

It depends on your goals. If moving to Dubai is a priority, you might well apply.

2) Do you think they would be inclined to hire me? ( or is it frowned against).

It depends on your interview performance, but in general if you come from another MBB they should consider your profile as a strong one.

3) Do i expect the same level of interviews considering that I’ll be joining an entry level as well?

Bain usually has candidate-led interviews. There are a few differences between McKinsey and Bain interviews, you can find more below:

▶ McKinsey vs BCG and Bain: How Interviews are Different

Good luck!

Hi,

No harm applying and this does happen, I've seen it before (although not very frequently, as most people would rather not move as per your original motivation).

The only concern/question Bain would have is whether you are leaving because of poor performance or because of other personal reasons (like your situation).

In terms of interviews, yes you will go through the same recruiting process.

As for tenure - this is typically negotiated how much credit they are willing to give you.

All the best!

Thank you for your response. Do you know how I could make it clear that it has nothing to do with performance? (anything to show/say)

Hi there,

great question - thanks for sharing.

  1. Should you apply? Based on the specific situation you shared, switching firm can be a legit reason, yes.
  2. What to expect? Expect their standard recruiting process. Once you make it in, they may offer you tenure credit though.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi

Hello!

Precisely for the high amount of questions (1) asked by my coachees and students and (2) present in this Q&A, I created the “Economic and Financial concepts for MBB interviews”, recently published in PrepLounge’s shop (https://www.preplounge.com/en/shop/prep-guide/economic_and_financial_concepts_for_mbb_interviews).

After +5 years of candidate coaching and university teaching, and after having seen hundreds of cases, I realized that the economic-related knowledge needed to master case interviews is not much, and not complex. However, you need to know where to focus! Hence, I created the guide that I wish I could have had, summarizing the most important economic and financial concepts needed to solve consulting cases, combining key concepts theorical reviews and a hands-on methodology with examples and ad-hoc practice cases.

It focuses on 4 core topics, divided in chapters (each of them ranked in scale of importance, to help you maximize your time in short preparations):

  • Economic concepts: Profitability equation, Break even, Valuation methods (economic, market and asset), Payback period, NPV and IRR, + 3 practice cases to put it all together in a practical way.
  • Financial concepts: Balance sheet, Income statement/P&L and Performance ratios (based on sales and based on investment), +1 practice case
  • Market structure & pricing: Market types, Perfect competition markets (demand and supply), Willingness to pay, Pricing approaches, Market segmentation and Price elasticity of demand, +1 practice case
  • Marketing and Customer Acquisition: Sales funnel, Key marketing metrics (CAC and CLV) and Churn, +1 practice case

Feel free to PM me for disccount codes for the guide, and I hope it helps you rock your interviews!

Hi there,

Yes you can transfer.

Yes, you have nothing to lose by applying…you may as well find out!

Try to network beforehand, and yes, you should expect the “same” level of interviews.

Hello,

Given your situation, I think it would be perfectly reasonable for you to apply, and no one would hold it against you. You'd have to go through the same exact recruiting process, but given your background at McK you will likely be a strong candidate. In any case, there's no harm in applying and seeing what happens, if you think this might be an attractive option for you.
