Hi All,

I was wondering how long after joining BCG/Mck (in a prominent office e.g. SF/London/NYC) would the brand name start playing a critical role in improving one's chances in getting a great exit opportunity? I read that typically 12 to 18 months would be good enough but I was wondering if 6-12 months would also have a strong impact that would atleast increase one's chances significantly at passing the CV screening stage at other large multinational firms.

Also, does joining one of these companies in one of those prime locations make it easier to transfer to other prominent firms (whether other MBB, Big4, Banking, etc) in the ME region?

I've hired ex MBB consultants into roles and every time I see someone leaving in a year or less it's a huge red flag for me. Two years is optimal. The first year you're learning  how to be a consultant and in the second year is when you get good and start to lead big parts of projects. People that leave in less than a year usually have performance issues or consulting is just not for them.

How is 18 months looked upon, if you're going to further schooling after i.e. MBA/JD/MD?

Hi there,

Please don't do less than 12 months. It's the same as not having gone there and it indicates being pushed out.

1.5 years works (especially if it's 2 calendar years). You ideally want to aim for 2 months.

At around the 1.5 years mark is when recruiters/headhunters start to chase you.

Hello,

To answer your first question, it will depend on the potential employer. 2 years is usually the golden standard, though for startups, smaller companies, or less similar industries, 12-18 months might be enough. Less than a year is not ideal in my opinion.

To answer your second question, it will depend on the sectors you work in, and how similar your work is to the work you want to do in the ME region (i.e., if you have some prior industry exposure or have clients in the ME). But in any case, MBB are globally recognized names, so having them on your CV wouldn't hurt even if there is less industry crossover.

Hey there,

The real markup on the job market happens AFTER 2 years of tenure with MBB. That is the time when you can exit and find a great job quickly, while also being bombarded with head hunter messages on LinkedIn and very attractive salaries.

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

1) I was wondering how long after joining BCG/Mck (in a prominent office e.g. SF/London/NYC) would the brand name start playing a critical role in improving one's chances in getting a great exit opportunity?

It depends on the exit. For startups (either founding one or joining one), even 6-12 months could be fine. For corporate roles, the sweet spot is after 2 years.

2) Also, does joining one of these companies in one of those prime locations make it easier to transfer to other prominent firms in the ME region?

It depends if you work in sectors/ companies that could be related with the region – exits are correlated with the type of projects you will work on.

Best,

Francesco

Agree 2yrs would be minimum and it very much depends on the sector and role you aim for, however in more senior role they are requesting at least 5 yrs of MBB experience. I would be however realistic, often people has unrealistic expectation. What I recommend though is leveraging the career service MBB have, they can actually secure you a good job.
