Hi everyone,

I need to write a cover letter in order to apply to a BCG event (Aspire Women's Workshop) and I was wondering if I should mention the event / why I want to attend, or simply write a cover letter as if I would already be applying to BCG. I am planning to apply at a later stage towards August, but this is only needed for the event at the moment.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Q: I need to write a cover letter in order to apply to a BCG event (Aspire Women's Workshop) and I was wondering if I should mention the event / why I want to attend, or simply write a cover letter as if I would already be applying to BCG.

If you are applying to an event, I would recommend to indicate why you would like to apply to that particular BCG event.

You can structure the cover letter into 4 parts:

  1. Introduction, mentioning the event you want to apply to and one reason why it is interesting to you
  2. Why you are qualified to join the event, where you can indicate 3 skills/stories from your CV relevant to the event
  3. Why you are interested in the event, with additional 1-2 specific reasons
  4. Final remarks, mentioning again your interest and contacts

Hope this helps,

Francesco

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • While your cover letter should be tailored to the specific recruiting event, sharing your motivation for BCG as a whole might very well be part of this.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to address your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Your cover letter should be specifically geared towards to BCG event itself (given that is what the cover letter is for).

However, you'll absolutely be able to re-use your body paragraphs!

Hi there,

based on my past experience in BCG w/ those events

1) They have a component of “diversified talent attractors” to keep the recruting funnel healthty - meaning they are a way to be pre-flagged for possible recruiting

2) On the other hand they are not “fully-blown” recruiting events - so your cover letter will not be judged in the same way as the actual application cover letter

I would advise you to

1) Keep the cover letter general following e.g. Francesco's template

2) But adding a phrase/little piece that makes your interest in applying BCG and your relevant “selling points” apparent - to cover your base

3) If they ask for a CV - definitely ask a coach or someone qualified to review for you before submitting. This could go 1:1 in your potential “recruiting file”

Hope this help.

Feel free to DM if you want to deep-dive

Hi there,

A cover letter should always be tailored and support the application at hand, in this case a very specific event. You should make this very clear in the 1st paragraph.

In the 2nd paragraph, which is the main section of the document, you should bring your experience and background come to life through, which will make you come across like a great candidate for BCG in general (event or FT position, makes no difference).

In the 3rd paragraph, you can connect the dots i.e. refer to the event, your experiences and goals for the future, and how a career with BCG is your ultimate goal.

Please let me know if you need some help with this. Happy to help you write the strongest possible Cover Letter.

Best of luck!
Moritz

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Hi there,

If the cover letter is for the event, then tailor it for the event.

The key to writing any cover letter is the tailoring part. Many recruiters have grown to be quite direct with candidates by now and even ask them to send a cover letter only if it goes beyond what is mentioned in the CV. There's no point in re-hashing information that's already in the CV or sending a cover letter that could be sent in the same way to various firms. Tailor as much as possible and seek to tell your story and exhibit your strengths.

Best,
Cristian

I'd absolutely mention the event and why you want to go - you're applying to BCG but you're specifically applying for the event. Same as you would for a particular role. Good luck!

If you are applying to an event you need to explain why you want to go to (and why you should be accepted in) that event.
