Hello

How would you answer the following:

in a recent interview with one of the MBB firms I was given the following case:

Choco Philly is a chocolate manufacturer Based in the US. They are facing an increase in demand for one of their chocolate fillings that is made for the holidays: thanksgiving and Christma. Choco Philly has engaged us to help them meet the demand increase.

4 factors i would want to look at:

Demand analysis

  • Where is the demand coming from? New customers or existing customers?
  • By how much is the new demand higher than usual demand?
  • By when does this demand need to be fulfilled?
  • Is this a one time demand or will it sustain in the future? Either throughout or during the peak/holiday season?

Supply analysis

  • What is our current production/supply level?
  • What is the current production/supply capacity? Can we meet the new demand with our existing capacity?
  • If current capacity is not enough, can we ramp up capacity either inhouse or through outsourcing? How long will this take?
  • Will our suppliers be able to handle the increased needs?
  • Do we have logistics capacity and capability to meet the increased demand? Or does something need to be done there as well?

Financial impact

  • Revenue impact if we serve the new demand
  • Cost impact to serve the new demand
  • Any investment needed to serve the new demand e.g. extend manufacturing capacity or onboard contract manufacturers

Other general considerations

  • Cost of not serving this demand. Will it impact competitive positioning? Is there risk of losing more demand from customers?
  • Any contractual obligations to current customers that affect dealing with new customers?

Hi there,

Why don't you propose a framework and then we can help improve it :)

There are generally multiple frameworks that can be used for any one prompt!

Hi there,

I agree with Ian - let's have your proposal and take it from there.

Meanwhile, please consider the following: when being asked for “factors to consider”, you should do the following:

  • Create MECE buckets that allow you to arrange your “factors” in a meaningful way to create an issue tree (there's typically a range of good solutions)
  • When filling the buckets, don't just put single words at the end of your issue tree like “revenue” or “customer preferences” - this would be areas of analysis but we want ideas! Be specific about what exact factors you would consider with regards to revenue drivers (and I don't just mean $ x volume) and customer preferences that are specific to the case.

The above sounds simple but only very few candidates get structure and content right (and communicate it in a good top-down fashion).

Hope this helps a bit! Best of luck!
