Hello, I have been invited to interview with Capital One's consulting group, and the first round is apparently a 1-hour mini case.

Has anybody done this interview before, and could share some information?

Not specifically for Capital One, but this sounds to me like a written case.

If I were you, I'd first reach out to the recruiter to ask more about the format of the case. If they describe as a situation where you are given materials, exhibits, etc, you're given and hour and then you're meant to come up with a couple of slides and a presentation, then it's definitely a written case

Happy to share 1-2 examples of written cases for practice. You should be able to find some online as well.

In parallel, I'd recommend you try to network with recent joiners at Capital One who are in a similar position as the one that you're applying for.

This is a great networking opportunity and a chance to understand what it takes to be successful in the recruitment process from people who recently navigated it. They could provide you with priceless tips.

Here's how to navigate these conversations:

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on securing an interview with Capital One's consulting group!

A 1-hour mini case is likely to be a shorter and more focused version of a traditional case interview. Here are a few tips that can help you prepare:

Case Fundamentals: Review the fundamental concepts of case interviews, such as structuring your approach, breaking down problems, and using frameworks.

Behavioral Questions: Be prepared for behavioral questions as well. Capital One might include some in their interview to assess your fit with the company.

Industry Knowledge: Since Capital One is a financial services company, having a good understanding of the banking and finance industry can be beneficial.

Problem Solving: Focus on your problem-solving abilities and your ability to communicate your thought process clearly.

Best of luck and warm regards, Frederic 🚀

Hi,

Have not sat for this interview before - but sharing some perspective from my own experience sitting for corp strat interviews and from my friends who have sat for Banking/Visa/Mastercard interviews

  • Most importantly - the core consulting toolkit is what interviewers are looking for, regardless of the interview length, format or topic
  • Generally, I found corp strat interviews to be less ‘strict' in terms of its adherence to the typical MBB case interview format
    • Interviewers generally treated the interview more as a conversation than a choreographed dance
    • My friend who works at a top local bank here does give a typical case MBB style
  • For my friends who went for Banking/Visa/Mastercard type interviews, the case topic was majority related to the business (e.g. What should be our strategy to gain marketshare against competitor)

Here's what I suggest you do

  • Reach out to HR - ask them what the format of that 1 hour would look like
    • I'm helping some candidates now for their corp strat interviews and sometimes HR can be very helpful :)
  • Focus on your fundamentals → you really won't go wrong if you got good fundamentals
  • Read up and start thinking about the banking/FI sector

All the best!
