Hi everyone,

Hope you are all well.

I would like to know if i have a mild stutter, can i consider consulting as a potential career?

in my real life i try to hide it but during stressful situations (such as public speaking or interviews), I tend to stutter.

That has caused me problems in interview before because i looked nervous but in fact i was not. I was just stuttering because i have this problem.

Can i consider consulting as a career? Do you know someone that stutters that got an offer?

I need to know because I would not want to be wasting my 2-3 months of preparation just to get rejected because I have this problem.

Please let me know :)

thanks!

Hi there,

I would like to know if i have a mild stutter, can i consider consulting as a potential career?

If you want to do your career in consulting this is a BIG YES. Best consultants are brilliant problem solvers and this has nothing to do with stuttering.

This is another BIG YES. I have interviewed one person with stutter in McKinsey and she got the offer. The best way to handle it is to anticipate this at the beginning of the process and interviews in a natural way.

Good luck with the preparation!

Alberto

Make obstacles an opportunity for growth.

Yes, you can be a consultant.

But you can be a consultant who stutters their way through consulting or one who fixes the stutter.

Hire a speaking coach to figure it out. This will also then have broader effects in your life.

Everybody struggles with something. What makes the difference between people is how they deal with their liabilities. Ultimately, those who manage to turn them into stregths, win.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

First, please remember the case prep is NOT a waste of time. you learn business acument, strategic thinking, structured thinking, problem solving, clear communication, etc. So, (if you do it right), case prep is just a great “excuse” to build up your profoessional skillset.

In my view, you should try. You said “light” and you said it only comes out when nervous. Sounds like somethign that can be managed.

Regardless, I tend to find that priming people and bringing the elephant out of the room is the best way to manage these types of things (flagging to people upfront, confidentally and naturally “btw I have a bit of a stutter, so if it happens, don't mind me!”)

It is not a problem, although you need to know how to manage your stutter.

One of my friends not only got into consulting, he had a long and successful career in consulting, became a University professor, and even led a political party...

Hi,

I would like to know if i have a mild stutter, can i consider consulting as a potential career?

IMO you absolutely can. A quick google search shows that there are many famous people, including actors, who've struggled with the same problem and managed to overcome it. So don't see the reason why you can't too.

You are saying that you tend to stutter during the stressful situations. Therefore, it may be possible to reduce your stutter by tackling the root cause (the stress). For that, I would consider therapy. It has produced a tremendous effect for myself, so maybe  you can benefit from it too.

Disclaimer: of course, there may be many more reasons causing the stutter, I'm just offering my point of view (hypothesis) on this issue. The decision on how to proceed with this is yours to take.

I need to know because I would not want to be wasting my 2-3 months of preparation just to get rejected because I have this problem.

I strongly believe that a quality consulting preparation is NEVER a waste of time. You may use the skills you'll acquire by prepping in almost any analytical job and in many everyday situations as well.

Good luck!
Nick
