Hi all, I received an offer for a corporate strategy role and an offer call will be scheduled to walk me through the details of the offer.

I have heard that the salary is determined by ranking at this company - which is quite structured and fixed. However, I do not know whether the salary base is determined by sub-rankings, and whether they provide sign-on & relocation bonus.

Would be great to learn from you how to negotiate the offer package with the firm. Should I:

(i) Ask the HR whether there is space to negotiate the base, and whether they can provide relocation support / sign-on bonus during the offer call.

(ii) During the offer call, mention nothing about salary negotiation, and just ask for time to read the contract. Then reach out to HR a few days later to negotiate the package.

What's your thought on this?

(Additional info: the base pay is ~27% less than my previous role, but I am out of job now. This new job is in a new location so I need to relocate.)

Hi there,

Congrats on the offer! Most importantly - you've got the job!

Please don't try to negotiate on the initial call. You need to ask questions that help you understand the offer.

Re-iterate your interest in the firm and thank them for the offer. Then, let them know you need time to digest and will get to them with any questions.

Finally, hire a coach.

You can do it for free and almost certainly miss out on $$$.

Or, you can pay a very small % of the potential gains to get expert support - just a 30 min session can pay huge dividends.

For example, I doubled my signing bonus from $20k to $40k.

(i) Ask the HR whether there is space to negotiate the base, and whether they can provide relocation support / sign-on bonus during the offer call.

Do not do this during. Do not “ask is there space”.

Please please get a coach for this. Wording, timing, format, can affect everything. It can even affect what they counter with. You're leaving thousands of $ on the table if you don't navigate it properly.

(ii) During the offer call, mention nothing about salary negotiation, and just ask for time to read the contract. Then reach out to HR a few days later to negotiate the package.

This. And have a good plan of attack.

Figure out if you're better via email or call.

If email, craft the email precisely and have it professionally reviews.

If call, practice and roleplay out the call - be ready TO BE COUNTERED and practice balancing firmness with politeness.

Congratulations on receiving the offer for the corporate strategy role. Negotiating an offer package can be a crucial step in securing a favorable compensation package. Based on my experience, here's my advice on how to approach the negotiation process:

During the offer call, it's a good idea to gather as much information as possible about the offer details. You can ask the HR representative about the salary structure and whether there is any flexibility in the base salary. Additionally, inquire about the possibility of receiving relocation support or a sign-on bonus. This will give you a better understanding of the company's policies and whether there is room for negotiation.

If the HR representative provides information about the salary structure and it seems fixed, you can still express your enthusiasm for the role and the company. You can then ask for some time to review the offer and the contract. This will give you an opportunity to carefully evaluate the terms and consider your options.

After reviewing the offer, if you feel that the base pay is significantly lower than your previous role and you have a valid reason for negotiation (such as the need to relocate), it may be worth reaching out to HR a few days later to discuss the package further. You can express your interest in the role and highlight your qualifications and experience. You can then make a case for why you believe a higher base salary or additional support, such as relocation assistance or a sign-on bonus, would be appropriate.

Remember to approach the negotiation process professionally and respectfully. Be prepared to provide supporting evidence or rationale for your requests. It's important to strike a balance between advocating for your interests and maintaining a positive relationship with the company.

I hope this guidance helps you navigate the negotiation process. Best of luck with your offer discussions, and feel free to reach out if you have any further questions!

Hi,

If i were you, I wouldn't ‘ask whether there is space to negotiate the base’. It already gives the firm an opening to say “no” (to their benefit) without even hearing your POV.

I would approach this closer to what you suggested in point #2:

  • Say thanks for running through the information
  • Say that you will take some time to digest the information and come back with any questions or clarifications
  • Spend time to craft your negotiation strategy/approach i.e. benchmarks, argument phrasing etc.

All the best!

First of all, congrats!!

This is not a great market for job searching at the moment, so the fact that you prevailed suggests you are a very strong candidate.

Now, in terms of the call, I would only use it for collecting information at this point. Basically, try to understand what is their offer, what bonuses they offer and any other forms of compensation.

Don't negotiate live.

Say thank you, that you want to take some time and let everything sink in and then you're going to get back to them. If anything, agree with the recruiter to have a short follow-up call in a few days.

In the meantime, do your research on what would be possible (i.e., if they even offer relocation bonus for that location) and prepare your perspective (i.e., counteroffer) and motivation for it.

Then discuss it with them in that separate call.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer! In terms of your question:

Q: Should I negotiate the offer during offer call, or after offer call?

I would recommend to negotiate after the call for a few reasons:

  1. You will have the full picture and all the details (there might be parts unclear during the HR call that you will realize only after).
  2. You will be able to structure more clear backups to sustain your points.
  3. There is no downside in doing so after the call.

Best,

Francesco

I'm with Ian here. This is a place where coaching can provide a lot of value, and you need a crafted plan for your approach.

Here's the thing, how you negotiate depends on your specific situation, needs and preferences. Just asking for more, doesn't work.

Explaining why it should be more and why you need more, and knowing what are the trade-offs you are willing to accept… works much better. Using the right wording and NEVER putting yourself in a position that will make them less excited about you.
