Hi all,

I had two first-round interviews with BCG two months ago. Since I haven't received any response after one month, I called HR to ask for feedback. She mentioned that the process is still ongoing and they will let me know. It's been a month of silence since that conversation.

Does this mean that I have already been rejected or on a waiting list? Should I call HR one more time to check?

I'm really sorry to hear about this :/

I actually just read an article on LinkedIn that stated Consulting is the industry/job that takes the longest time for an offer to be made.

This certainly matches with what I have seen :P

Sit tight. They are interviewing other candidates and likely still need to make decisions (or, they're waiting on another candidate to accept/reject the offer).

Regardless, there's nothing you can do. Do not call HR…calling only has downside risk not upside.

Make sure you keep applying to other firms!

Although that doesn’t sound promising, you have not necessarily been rejected or put on a waiting list at this stage. It could simply be that they have uncertainty with their pipeline and thus delayed the whole process.

2) Should I call HR one more time to check?

Given that one month has passed, I don’t see any issue with that. I would expect that they will reply the same, but there is no harm in doing so.

Could you share which region / office?

Regarding your questions - 

  1. Rejected? Likely not - usually once the decision has been made, they will communicate fairly quickly. Might be a Keep-in-View situation though
  2. Should you call HR? Yes, can do. Doesn't hurt to follow up with them - it won't have a detrimental impact on your chances.

Hi,

I would say that as long as they haven't officially rejected you yet, you are still theoretically in the running.

It's been known that hiring has either slowed or been frozen in numerous geographies / offices globally, so it's likely to be a factor for your slow response.

If you have any friends / network within the firm, this would be the most powerful thing to leverage to really get a better understanding of the context and also help you to follow up.

Hi there,

based on my experience in recruiting in the BCG offices I have been part of

1) Assessment Not rejected - most likely in the “queue” - especially now with hiring freezes or delays, you can expect this quiet periods with no info to become more common. Consulting firms are forced to manage the pipeline

2) Call HR: if more than 2-3 weeks have passed, I would do it. It shows your commitment, but you have to spend time using the right wording: 

- do not be pressuring or passive-agressive, be concise, professional and restate your strong interest for the firm. 

- If you have other final round/offers from other firm, this could be a bargaining chip to accelerate your process. I would make HR aware, phrasing in a “would like to know what are is likely timing for your process, given your firm is my top choice and would like to calibrate/control the other hiring processes”.

What geography is this?

It's rather odd.

They usually respond within two weeks, so two months is more of a record. 

I'd reach out back to HR. Tell them that you're in the application process with other firms and you want clarity over the status of your application. 

Aside from this, I'd suggest you apply broadly to other firms as well to diversify your risk and no be in this situation again.
