Breaking into the scene

Hi all,

I have been interested in joining the consultancy field and shifting into it. I come from an Engineering background with an AI masters from Carnegie Mellon and work in research and am located in Dubai atm.

I am looking for advice on how to jump in, suggestions for companies that have a portfolio that matches my profile.

I have applied and taken the McKinsey solve, did BCG's Pymetrics and applied to Bain (no response yet) this week but I am looking for more specialized technology consulting firms that I can have a better chance breaking into.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Actually firms like MBB also do have more technical roles. E.g. at BCG where I was from, there are technical roles available at BCG X (previously known as BCG GAMMA) in terms of AI/ML.

So rather than the firm itself, I would suggest you consider the opportunities in terms of roles

AI is a hot topic now and many firms are building up AI specific capabilities, not just ‘tech’ focused consulting firms.

All the best!

Hello,

Benjamin's advice is spot on - many of the big consulting companies have more technical practices and roles that need filling. People join consulting from all walks of life, so you can also think applying for more generalist positions if that is what you are interested in! I would do your diligence on different practices and roles at firms, figure out what interests YOU as well as what you think you are best-suited for, and apply widely.

#1 BCG coach | MBB | Tier 2 | Digital, Tech, Platinion | 100% personal success rate (8/8) | 95% candidate success rate

Hi there,

First of all, it's absolutely do-able.

One of the best consultants in the Sydney BCG office was a professional violinist at the Sydney Opera house prior to starting. The Partner on my first project was a former professional flautist.

I worked with doctors, dentists, lawyers, musicians, english majors, etc.

And, you have a Tech background which is fantastic.

What to do

There a lot you can do, but #1 would be getting some consulting-related experience on your resume to show you're serious about this. Join clubs, communities, organizations, and, importantly, apply to a bunch of experiential consulting programs (Where you do consulting projects for free to get experience).

Then, network a ton.

Additionally, think about applying to the tech/IT-related firms + roles (BCG Platninion/GAMMA, McKinsey Black, Monitor Deloitte, etc.)

#1 rated MBB & McKinsey Coach

Hi there!

This sound great. And you have a cool background.

Reach out and I can share an application tracker (no strings attached) to help you identify your target firms and then track the applications for each.

You might also find this guide useful that covers how to build an application strategy when you move into consulting:

And also this guide which discusses what are the core skills that you need in consulting and which you should then present in your application:

Best,
Cristian

Hi Moayad,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey and BCG thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, especially given your specialization in AI, I think you have a higher chance of getting invited to interviews with MBB than other candidates, since most consulting firms are desperately seeking people who actually know about AI.
  • Moreover, if you nonetheless want to explore more specialized consulting firms, I would advise you to have a look at the Vault consulting rankings, where you may also find the best consulting firms for specific practices.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
