I’m applying to MBB, after a short stint in tech consulting at another firm. I’ve worked with some big brand-name clients that would look good on my resume.

Would mentioning specific clients on the resume be a red flag? If yes, how to convey the same information/impression?

Hi there,

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • Yes, and there is a high likelihood that you may not even be invited to the interviews if you mention client names. Mentioning client names is only permissible if the collaboration is public knowledge, such as if it has been discussed in the news or a magazine. Otherwise, as stated in the employment contract, you are prohibited from disclosing any confidential information.
  • Additionally, please ensure that you anonymize the client enough so that they are not identifiable from the information you provide.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application files, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hello A,

Mentioning specific clients on your resume can potentially be a red flag as it could violate client confidentiality or raise concerns about data privacy. However, you can still convey the same information and impression without mentioning the client names by:

  1. Highlighting the industry or sector of the clients you have worked with: Instead of naming specific clients, you can describe the industries or sectors that they operate in. For example, you could mention that you have worked with clients in the technology, healthcare, or financial services industries.
  2. Emphasizing the scope of your work: Focus on the type of work you did for the clients rather than their names. Highlight the specific projects, tasks, and responsibilities you had, such as developing a growth strategy, implementing process improvements, or leading a team.
  3. Quantifying your impact: Use numbers and metrics to show the impact of your work. For example, you could mention that you helped increase revenue by a certain percentage, reduced costs by a specific amount, or improved customer satisfaction scores.
  4. Using generic descriptions: If you want to mention a specific client, you can use a generic description, such as "Fortune 500 technology company" or "Global healthcare provider". However, make sure that this does not violate any confidentiality agreements or cause any concerns about data privacy.

Remember, it's important to be transparent and honest on your resume while also being mindful of client confidentiality and data privacy.

Best of luck!

Hi there,

Q: Would mentioning specific clients on the resume be a red flag? If yes, how to convey the same information/impression?

Normally you can share the name of a client only if it is public knowledge. You should also check if you have any confidentiality agreements signed related to this.

To avoid possible issues, you can use the structure mentioned by Ian (eg “Supported top 3 XYZ company to ABC”).

Best,

Francesco

In addition, when you are sanitizing please make sure that you are tactful and don't make it obvious/defeat the purpose of sanitizing.

  • E.g. worked for a top tech firm headquartered in Redmond

You can state that is is a big brand name. You cannot state their name (or in any other way reveal their identity).

Hi there,

Please do not. Instead, say things like “fortune 50 energy firm” or “top 3 financial services firm” etc.
