First, thank you for helping me out!

I’m considering between MBB in SouthEast Asia (Not Singapore/Malaysia office) and a top-2 US airline as commercial strategy manager for a post-MBA job.

I may want to recruit back to US in mid-term (after 2-3 years) and I’m a SouthEast Asian with MBA degree in Top 20 US.

I am leaning toward MBB but I don’t know if attending MBB in SE Asia can still open the door in future if I want to recruit back to US (ideally senior manager level roles in strategy/commercial/marketing/product management).
Hope to hear more of your thoughts!

Hello there,

you need to consider your personal goals and perspectives, which I guess are  important in the decision, but from the professional point of view and from my experience (13 years industry experience before joining BCG) I would say:

Consulting experience:
- Opens door to other potential work opportunities if you decide to exit, allows you to explore what you may like

- Faster learning: what you learn in consulting in 2 years, is what you may learn in 4 years in the industry or never

- As a junior, you will already be exposed to C-level meetings and decisions, something unlikely possible in the industry

- Access to enormous network and connection opportunity

- Your career can accelerate at a much faster pace than in the industry  (e.g. I am fixer, not a maintainer and I had to look for a new job every 2 years, not many companies are ready to promote you so often)

- You wont get bored, every project is different, you will be solving complex and challenging problems -> very important if you are goal-driven and get bored fast

- Consulting offers a much greater scope of work vs. narrowly defined job in the industry, plus there are many opportunities to participate in diverse projects in the competence center/company

... many others...

The downsize is the work-life balance…. you will work much harder than in the industry… if you are more junior, you will be paid better than in the industry, for mid-senior employees industry pay is the same as consulting…

The decision ultimately is yours, but if you would like to chat about the differences between industry and consulting, please feel free to reach out.

Wishing you all the best,
Lucie

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on having such a clear view on your future career options!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, I would advise you to do the following:
    • Weigh the different components that are of meaning to you, independently of the current options (e.g. prestige, culture, international exposure, compensation, location). After that, score the two options depending on your criteria and their weighting, resulting in two scores (this way you have covered the left-brain perspective).
    • Critically assess your initial reaction to the outcome of the scoring. For instance, if you feel the urge to tweak the numbers, this is a solid indicator that you do not want this decision to become reality (this way you have covered the right-brain perspective).
    • This way, you will be able to integrate both your feelings and facts (and thus both brains) into the decision-making, guaranteeing a higher chance you will still be happy with it years later. In case you want a more detailed discussion on this approach, please feel free to contact me directly.
  • Personally, I feel location seems to be a rather important criterion for you. As such, I would advise you to think about why you should wait 2-3 years working in another region and industry without the possibilities to already establish your professional and personal network at your future location.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best decide on your career entry, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offers!

The answer depends on your goal. Where do you want to be in 5-10 years? Ideally try to identify the company that can help you to achieve that goal faster. If you are still not sure, MBB will likely open more doors in the future.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there, if your goal is MBB US, I would go for MBB SEA. There may be an option to move internally if you perform well after a few years. Even if that’s not an option, you should have more chances to land an invitation from MBB with another MBB on your CV compared to a US airline. Hope this helps

Well done on getting that far and receiving those amazing offers!

With a US top 20 MBA and MBB experience from anywhere in the world, you will be able to find a great job in the US if that's what you want.

As pointed out, the decision depends on very personal things like family, money, goals, etc. However, if you're already leaning towards MBB and just want to make sure that you can work in the US in the medium/long term if you first go to SE Asia for a top tier firm - I encourage you to do it!

It is not really that difficult to change MBB offices after a couple of years or so (in some cases even earlier). There's plenty of posts around changing offices/countries, maybe this helps:

Best of luck!

Hi,

Congrats!

To decide between the two, I suggest you genuinely answer following key mutual fit questions:

  1. Do I have the right aptitude/skills to offer to the firm?
  2. Do my values align with the firm’s (culture, leadership, ways of working, reputation etc)?
  3. Is the role a good fit with my career aspirations at least in the short to mid-term?
  4. Will this job allow me to give my best & be happier?
  5. Are any underlying risks of taking this job manageable?

Once you have answered the above questions honestly, you are then ready to look at other factors such as title, salary, benefits, location, work life balance etc to work out your final decision.

Just like everything else in life, no job or firm will be perfect. There will always be something a little better. There will be ups and downs and it’s important not to be driven by anxiety to get into “a job”. Focus on mutual fit.

All the best choosing.

Hi there,

Unless we hear about your goals, desires, aims, ambitions, values, there's no input to give!

What are you looking for? What are you hoping to achieve. MBB likely has a far higher career trajectory, learning curve, and exit opportunities. However, it may not be what you truly want to do.

In general, it will be easier for you to find a 2nd job in the US with MBB SEA in your resume than with Commercial Strategy in US Airlines.

If you go for airlines, you will be really narrowing your industry focus. With MBB, you will be attractive for many industries, and the MBB brand is very strong in the US.
