Hi,

I had a process ongoing for Product Owner but was offered Product Analyst today. Is this a position below?

Can someone guide?

Hi there,

The hierarchy looks something like this, depending on location:

Product Manager = Product Owner > Senior Product Analyst > Product Analyst

It often happens that McKinsey likes a certain profile and then assign them a different role in the recruitment process based on what they think the best fit would be. In your case, it's below what you targeted but not to worry! Climbing the ladder goes very quickly at my old firm.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Moritz

Hi!

To my knowledge, yes, it's one role under.

If I were you, I'd get on a call with the recruiter to understand the scope of the adjusted role.

Almost always there's a very good reason as to why they offer you an adjusted role. In most cases it's because you don't have sufficient experience or they expect you would really struggle to start at the more senior role.

They're basically doing you a favor in most instance.

So don't assume from the get go that it's a demotion and a demotion is a bad thing. Keep the long-term prospect in mind. Once you prove that you can do the role well you'll be promoted rather quickly.

Best,
Cristian

Hello!

As far as I know, it typically involves a lower-level position.

If I were in your shoes, I would recommend having a conversation with the recruiter to gain a clear understanding of the modified role's scope.

In most cases, there's a valid and compelling reason for offering an adjusted role. It often happens when an individual lacks sufficient experience or if the company anticipates challenges in starting at a more senior level. It's important to recognize that, in most instances, this is a gesture of support and not necessarily a demotion.

So, it's essential not to jump to conclusions that this represents a demotion, and remember that a demotion isn't inherently negative. Keep your long-term career prospects in mind. Once you've demonstrated your competence in this role, promotions can come relatively quickly.

Cheers,

Hi there,

Moritz is exactly right here!

Hmmm, looks like you did not interview well enough for the higher position and/or did not have a strong enough background/experience for PO.
