if I have received a start date for firm for 2024 (hired 2022, graduated 2023) and want to defer for ~6-7 months to complete a nonprofit data fellowship, would this likely be permissible if I asked HR?

Hi there,

The best answer to your question is to just run this by HR. What's the worse that could happen, the worst is that they say no. The best case scenario is that they say yes.

I also pushed back my own starting date by ~4 months because I wanted to travel before I started work, so these situations are not impossible.

All the best!

Hello,

In general this shouldn't be a problem. Feel free to run this by HR: you have a valid reason for deferral, there are no repercussions, and absolutely no harm in asking.

Hi there,

Honestly, in this market they'll probably be grateful that you defer! (They're actively defering others).

Simply ask and provide reasoning. Flag that you think it will make you a stronger consultant entering into the role. Also make sure it's clear you're still ok to start at the original date if they cannot change.

Hi,

yes, this seems like a legitimate reason that most firms will accept - as it also likely has relevance for your consulting job. Just reach out to HR and explain your situation. Also propose your desired alternative start date and see what they say.

Good luck

It is totally fine to ask, worst case they will say there is no option for it, however most companies are flexible in terms of the starting date.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, deferring a start date for a consulting firm is not an uncommon request, particularly for personal growth or educational opportunities like a nonprofit data fellowship. Many firms appreciate the extra experience and perspective that can be brought back into the role.
  • Moreover, given the tight economic situation, it is highly likely that the HR department wouldn’t have any issues with a deferral. They often have a flexible approach in adjusting start dates for new hires, especially if you communicate your reasons clearly and in advance.
  • Lastly, as such, I would highly advise you to thoroughly prepare this conversation. Prepare to explain how this fellowship will not only benefit you but also how it aligns with the company’s values and long-term goals. Make sure to discuss your intentions as soon as possible, providing all necessary details about the fellowship.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi!

In short: defering a start date is almost never a problem (only exception: specific topic-related roles that are not generals consulting positions). So just pick up the phone and call HR - this will be fine.

Cheers, Sidi
