Need advice/input on selecting a coach

Hello everybody,

I am preparing for the BCG case interview which is in two weeks.

My budget is limited to getting the CoachingPlus subscription.

I was advised to receive coaching from ex-project leader and above.

The complication is that I came across an ex-BCG associate with 100+ meetings and an ex-BCG project leader with <10 meetings.

May I know what other criteria/factors should I take into account to make my decision?

Also, I would appreciate any opinion or insights that I might have not mentioned.

Ex-McKinsey final round interviewer | Executive Coach

The number of meetings on PrepLounge only speaks to how long they have been on the platform and how much of their time they spend on case coaching. Assuming the same price, similar approach and both good reviews I would think of the following factors in order:

1. Relevant office (especially if you are interviewing for a more “local” office - e.g., ex-BCG NY for BCG Italy makes less sense)

2. Experience as an interviewer (i.e., Project Leader)

3. Background prior to BCG (e.g., if you are interviewing for BCG as an experienced hire engineer, an ex-BCG who joined as an experienced hire would likely better understand your circumstances than someone who joined as an intern from undergrad)

Hi Ken, thank you for the comment. May I know by how much would it defer if the coach was an ex-associate or an ex-manager? The reason for my question is to further understand the differences. Hope my question doesn't sound silly. Thank you Ken.

Great question. An ex-manager typically would be interview-trained and would have been an interviewer for longer than an ex-associate. They would often have done a lot more coaching of consultants including consultant training where they will have a broader appreciation for the consulting toolkit that is being tested in the case. There are many ex-associates who have not gone through the interviewer training and may have never interviewed a candidate before. How do you spot the difference is a tricky one as not every coach is transparent but most ex-managers and above will often call it out in their title. Beyond looking them up on linkedin, etc. I would use the time they spent at e.g., BCG to be a good indicator. Someone who spent less than 2 years would not have spent meaningful time as an interviewer and may not have been an interviewer, especially if they joined BCG as an Associate not Consultant, etc.

He's right. Most popular coaches here are not former managers or interviewers with less than 2 years of MBB experience

Hi there,

Honestly, you should have a call with both!

Honestly, just because someone is an ex-project lead doesn't mean they are going to be a better coach.

Equally, just because someone has 100+ sessions doesn't make them a better coach.

Speak with both of them and see what they have to offer. Ask about their methodology/approach. Assess them based on how well they seem to understand the process (and what's needed), how prepared they are (supporting material + plan), and whether they seem like a good teacher based on your style of learning.

Hey there,

1. I would simply go into the coaches database and filter for

  • Employer: BCG
  • Recommendation Rate: Descending

2. Look at the first couple of coaches, read their reviews and success rates. 

3. Reach out to them and ask for an intro call.

4. Go with the one you like most.

Write to both coaches - discuss your needs with them. Understand what they can offer to help you improve your chances. Do your due-diligence and then make a decision. You have complete freedom to choose either, both, or neither. Meeting count is also a function of how long the person has been on PrepLounge specifically.

Hello,

The number of meetings is just testament to how long coaches have used this platform for. In practice, ex-associates and ex-project leaders can make great coaches. I would recommend looking at the reviews and feedback coaches are getting from candidates, and then solve for firm match and seniority.
