Hi all, seeking your advice on how to prepare for corporate strategy interviews. I'm currently interviewing with a hotel brand and the manager is ex-MBB. Have done a few related projects but haven't worked in the industry before.

I've checked with the HR and there seem to be no “case interviews”. Thus, I'm curious about how ex-MBB project managers would tend to test interviewers for a corporate strategy role, and would they focus more on strategy analysis / project management / execution skill, etc.

Based on your experience, what's the best way to prepare for such role? Should I focus more on preparing fit & project experience, or should I focus more on understanding the overall industry and the company to prepare for more “open ended” business questions?

If the hiring manager is Ex-MBB, I would suggest the following:

 1. Research the company: Get to know the company you are interviewing with, the industry, and their competitors. Be prepared to answer why you picked this company specifically

2. Brush up on your analytical skills: These roles require strong analytical skills. Practice analyzing data and developing strategic recommendations based on your findings

3. Develop business acumen: Familiarize yourself with basic business concepts, including finance and accounting, marketing, and ops. This helps especially in determining how different parts of the business work together

4. Learn about the industry: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in the industry. Read industry reports, attend conferences, and network with industry professionals

5. Be confident: Corporate strategy roles involve presenting complex ideas to senior leadership and this requires a confident manner in communicating with your audience

Hi,

I've sat for corporate interviews that formally stated there was a ‘case’ and also for those that didn't say there would be a case. A couple of things I would do if I were in your situation:

  1. Clarify what your specific role entails/JD
    • This is important as it sets the context and ‘boundaries'. Essentially the interviewer is looking to hire you for a specific role and therefore will want to test and assess you if you can perform that role
  2. Prepare general fit questions including a focus on Why [This Hotel Brand/Industry]
    • As you have never done projects of this industry before, I think you would need to prepare a strong motivational response here
    • In all my experiences this question has typically come up especially when it was a “new” industry
  3. Prepare project experience with an emphasis on skills/experience related to your specific role
    • If the interviewer is trying to assess if you have the right skills for the job, then the most likely way he/she is going to test that, assuming there is NO case interview, is to ask about your previous work experience
    • E.g. even if you have never done a Hotel project before, if the role entails PMO, me as an interviewer would want to hear how you handled PMO in another context
  4. Brush up on typical case interview best practices for: structuring / brainstorming / market sizing
    • While there may not be a ‘full’ case interview, if the interviewer wants to test your problem solving skills, he/she might give you a snippet/small chunk of what might appear in a case interview
    • In my experience, I was asked to share my perspective on an actual problem/situation the interviewer was facing in his job

All the best!

Hi there,

That's a great question.

If he's ex-MBB then you might expect an interview that is similar to those in MBB (even if this is not a formalised structure within the organisation).

So preparing for it accordingly will definitely put you in a better position than that of other candidates.

The basic things I'd start with if I were you are:

  1. Case part
    1. market sizing
    2. structuring drills
  2. Personal fit part - the basic questions:
    1. tell me about yourself
    2. why this transition to the new job
    3. why this particular company
    4. also make sure that you have a clear personal storyline of how everything that you've done up until now in life lead to this moment

In terms of cases, you can try the following ones which are based on recent MBB interviews and contain detailed interviewer notes:

Best,
Cristian

PL-level BCG experience (6 years)|Interviewer at BCG| 6/6 personal + 95%+ candidates offer success rate

Hi there,

second what below - would add

1) brush up your case interviewing skills, even if not explicitly , I suspect the hiring manager will have a case-type interaction/discussion with you - this happened in 95% of my industry interview

2) prepare your fit part, especially relevant examples on your past that showcase skills directly transferable to the role

3) Uber prepare the why you want to work here - it will be an occasion to really show that you made your homework on knowing the company and why you can add value. Would be great if you can connect with ex employers or current ones in your target org in an informal way

hope it helps
