One piece of advice my partner gave me was that I tend to say too much facts instead of stating my “view”, and I should “think deeper”.

Could you provide some advice on how to build the mental muscle to have the ability / habit of “thinking deep”? What are some practical tips I could apply on daily work in order to improve the ability to think deep and provide insightful thoughts? Thank you!

(Note: apologies for not pointing this out - asking this through the ‘on the job’ lens instead of case interviews)

Hi there,

1) Could you provide some advice on how to build the mental muscle to have the ability/habit of “thinking deep”?

It seems you should be more structured in your communication. However, it is impossible to comment if you don’t provide:

  1. An example of a question asked and
  2. How you replied to that question

2) What are some practical tips I could apply on daily work in order to improve the ability to think deep and provide insightful thoughts?

Without knowing the points in 1, we can just provide generic advice. I would recommend to post a new question with what you are doing now so that we can comment.

You can find below some general communication tips:

Hello,

I assume this applies to case practice (as opposed to in your job/internship as a consultant)?

My first pointer would be to figure out whether you understand what your partner means by “thinking deeper” - do you yourself understand what you should do better? Do you agree with your partner's feedback? If not, it might be worth watching some videos of experienced casers / practicing with a more experienced friend to see what this looks like.

If you understand what they mean and want to learn how to best get there, the best response is always practice. Without seeing you do a case, I'm not 100% sure what your partner means by “think deeper”, but this sounds like it could be connected with creating and delivering structured responses, particularly frameworks. If this is your situation, I would recommend doing some drills focusing on just that part of the case. Read over some common case frameworks to understand how prompt questions can be broken down, pick some cases here on PrepLounge, do the framework, compare what you have with the answer. If possible, practice with someone more experienced and ask them to watch out for the “deep thinking” in particular.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi there,

They're telling you that you need structure. I.e. you need to work on your frameworking.

Consultants don't just list out random ideas to clients. They create organized, structured, objective-driven project plans to approach the problem.

You need to do the same!

How? Honestly, it's hard without coaching as it's such a 1-on-1 training. That said, here are some things you can do:

1) Read this article: https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/how-to-shift-your-mindset-to-ace-the-case

2) Read BCG and McK Insights daily

3) Framework daily (but not from “generic” framework sites)

Hi there,

I guess it is the ability to connect the dots and the various information into one picture and move into solution from here. There is no easy fix but generally each case is unique and people make mistake by trying to fit it into “standardized frameworks”. I would encourage you to write down all key information and take a moment to form a whole picture of the case, understand it what is going on and what is the key question.

I would be happy to support if you want to reach out directly,

Lucie
