Happy New Year to all. I have a few questions related to expert track applications. Grateful for your guidance and insights.

  1. Practice Expert - Travel Logistics and Infrastructure Interview Format: I am wondering whether the interview format and evaluation are different from the generalist role.
  2. Practice Expert V.S. Practice Specialist. If I understand it correctly, Practice Expert is equivalent to EM. Specialist is equivalent to Associate. May I know the difference between these two roles in terms of the interview format/ focus of each test session?
  3. Impact of my mistake- I applied for two positions almost at the same time. I received one rejection on the “Experienced Consultant” yesterday. While the status of the “Practice Expert” is still “submitted”. May I know whether it will negatively impact my Practice Expert application? Any other action I can take? Background: I have been waiting for the screening result of the Practice Expert role. It has been 20 days since my submission, but the status in the portal is still "submitted." My referral had kindly communicated my application to one partner before my online application for TLI practice. During the Christmas break, I submitted another online application under the "Experienced consultant" opening (the Job Description was very generic). I guess it was not a wise move at all.....  Unfortunately, within a week, I received a rejection letter for the "experienced consultant" role yesterday. Although the status of my “Practice Expert” role is still "submitted", I understand the rejection letter for the "experienced consultant" role is not a good sign anyway.   The letter stated, "After careful consideration of your application, we have concluded that we cannot proceed with your candidacy for the Experienced Consultant position at this time. Despite this decision, we would like to keep your information on file for possible opportunities with us in the future. If you are not interested, please feel free to let us know." Good news is that my referral will kindly help me check with HR to find out the status after the new year. While anxiously waiting for the answers during this new year break ( I should avoid doing the same bad move again.. :P)  your advice is much appreciated!

Thank you all! Wish you a happy new year

Hi there,

first of all, I am sorry for the anxiety you are going through right now.

I am on the expert track myself, let me share my point of view:

1. I am wondering whether the interview format and evaluation are different from the generalist role →

  • the screening is different in the sense you must prove strong expertise in the field/function AND at the same time you must clearly show you possess the key consulting skills as a generalist (problem solver, leadership, ability to make an impact, etc.)
  • Interviews are the same, you may or not have a case from your expertise, but as an experienced hire the bar is higher (problem-solving, questions, recommendations, etc.)

  2. Practice Expert V.S. Practice Specialist

From my understanding

Practice expert is equivalent to an Expert project leader ->  leading a case, you are already part of the leadership team hence you need to clearly demonstrate very strong expertise, leadership, client relation skills, communication, project management, etc. … your consulting skills must be at a very high level already.

Practice Specialist equivalent to consultant/associate, hence you don't lead the case but you a part of the team creating the content hence requirements are more on expertise, teamwork, resourceful, ability to work independently, etc.

3. Application & result

I don't think your application to the consultant would negatively impact your other application, but I would encourage you to reach out to HR team directly to ask about the status of the application and ask for a timeline. If you ask in a polite and educated way it is absolutely OK.

MBB are eager to get experienced hires, but the process is not as straightforward as for a graduate from a top university or Business school, but candidates usually fail on following 2 key success points:

1. Smart position targeting, as you can still become a generalist, but likely fenced in a specific industry, or you can be an expert, or join some of the special units such as knowledge team.

2. An appealing CV and cover letter demonstrating your expertise would be a win for the company and you possess all core capabilities necessary for consulting (eventually offsetting lack of the top tier schools/or lack of MBA).

Please feel free to reach out directly if you would need a support on this.

Wishing you all the best in 2022!

Lucie

Thank you, Lucie. I love your advice. Very constructive! Some good news: I just received the invitation for the next step! HR is scheduling a 15-30 mins call with me next week. The status in the portal now is " Submitted- In progress"! What a great new year gift. Once again, thank you!

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the call from HR for a first interview!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, experts need to showcase a lot of industry/ functional expertise in a specific area as opposed to generalist roles. As such, the evaluation might slightly differ while the formats will most likely be the same yet with different interviewers (i.e. future colleagues from the practice).
  • Even if the situation has already been resolved: If you apply for different positions, a rejection for any position will not affect the other one.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hey there,

Straight to your questions:

1. Format is the same, however, expect 50% of the cases to be in the field of TTL.

2. Format should be the same between the two. However, the more experienced, the more is expected of you in terms of your PEI stories (centering around the context of it)

3. Very common theme. Rejection for one specific role should not impact the chances for a different role. I am coaching a candidate who is in a similar situation (first got rejected for one role, 1 week later received the interview invitation for the other role).

Cheers,

Florian

That is not a mistake. You applied to two positions, and were rejected to one of them. That's fine.

Your other application will be reviewed independently, so don't worry - being rejected in one does not impact the odds of being accepted or rejected on the other.

Thank you, Pedro! You are right! I just received an email from the HR team to schedule a call with me next week. The status in the portal changed to " submitted- in progress". A great start of 2022! Thank you! Happy New Year!

Hi there,

Don't worry you are safe here! You didn't do the same position in multiple offices (which would be a mistake), but rather 2 separate positions.
