I just graduated and have interviews soon. I have to start from scratch ranging from casing to PEI as I find the process quite different from other types of interview. However, I am able to commit preparing full time (at least 5 hours per day) and will get a coach as a last resort if I can't do it on my own. Would 4 weeks be enough to prep or would it be better to postpone the interviews?

Hi there,

With 5 hours per day and 1 month before interviews, you can dedicate 150 hours.  That should be enough assuming you work on the right material.

In terms of preparation, I would recommend the following:

  1. Define a calendar for your preparation. Identify how many hours you have before the interview and allocate a time slot for preparation in your calendar for each day, working on the points below. Many people need 100+ hours to be ready before the interview so you can keep that as a benchmark.
  2. Read Case In Point or Case Interview Secrets for a general understanding of what a consulting interview is. Don’t focus on the structures proposed in the books, as they are not good enough nowadays.
  3. Start reading good MBA Consulting Handbooks – you can find several for free online (Insead is a good one to start). Read the cases and try to apply your structure to solve them. Whenever you see there is something missing, upgrade your structure with the new insides. Try to read at least a new case per day – in this way you will absorb better the information with constant learning.
  4. After the first 5-10 cases in books/handbooks and basic theory, start to practice live. PrepLounge can be helpful to connect with other candidates for that. There is a relevant part of the interview score that is based on your communication, which you cannot practice at all if you read cases only. Keep track of your mistakes and see if you repeat them. If so, try to identify the source of the mistake (feedback from experienced partners would be particularly useful for this). Be sure to focus on both the fit and the case part. The latter should also cover math and graph analysis.
  5. Before the interviews, be sure to prepare your questions for the interviewer – a great way to connect with the interviewer for a good final impression.

If you want to spend a few hours only instead of 100+ and cover everything mentioned above, I developed a program precisely for that.

I can also share with you real questions asked in your target office (I have a db with 1.400+ questions asked in 60+ offices you won't find anywhere else - you can check on my profile if I cover your particular office).

You can check the program at the following link to learn more:

If you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

Best,

Hi there,

Yes, 4 weeks can be enough though this depending significantly on 1) Your background, 2) Your ability (how quickly you learn) and 3) What coach you get

To play it safe, I would recommend more than 4 weeks. That said, plenty of my candidates have successfully interviewed with just 4 weeks of prep (or less).

I would say see how you go over the next 2 weeks. If you can't get 80% of the way there in 2 weeks, you should ask for an extension (I say 80% because of the 80/20 rule).

Good luck and feel free to reach out for help in getting started (I highly recommend a single coaching session early on as it pays massive dividends in the rest of the prep by making each hour of individual study far more effective).

Highest-rated McKinsey coach (ratings, offers, sessions) | 500+ offers | Author of The 1% & Consulting Career Secrets

Hey there,

4 weeks with 5 hours a day is plenty of time to prepare for MBB interviews.

A couple of tips for your prep:

  1. Get down the basics (approach, communication, problem-solving & analytics) by working with a coach or watching some case interview videos; rather stay away from Cheng and Cosentino (outdated)
  2. Practice drills (structure, math, charts) on your own (university case books, PrepLounge case database, PrepLounge math tool)
  3. Find a group of good case interviewees and practice with them. Focus on quality over quantity
  4. Put extra effort into your weaknesses and raise them to an OK level. Lift your strengths to an excellent level. This is the performance level you should display consistently across all interviews.
  5. Rinse and repeat
  6. To maximize your efforts, hire a coach for the first session and periodically in between to get it right from the start, get a tailored prep plan and gauge your improvement and adjust your prep plan along the way.

If you are specifically interested in McKinsey, check out these articles for your preparation:

Yes, 30 days at 5h per day should be more than enough to be enough ready for a first round interview in both case + behavioral interview. Just make sure to start strong early on, and don't postpone doing cases with real partners to the last week. You should start having some live cases at the end of your 1st week/beginning of 2nd.

And if after a couple of weeks you feel you still have a long way to go, you can (and should) postpone the interview.
