Hi PL community! I got an offer from BCG London. What is their transfer policy like? I wish to switch to the India office in the next year as my partner lives there. Is this something that would be possible?

Hi there,

Congratulations on the BCG offer!

Q:  I wish to switch to the India office in the next year as my partner lives there. Is this something that would be possible?

It won’t probably be easy after just 1 year of tenure but it is not impossible and you can definitely align on that with HR.

To maximize your chances you should ideally:

  • Have one or more partners in your target office favoring the transfer
  • Have one or more partners in your home office favoring the transfer
  • Have a strong performance
  • Have or be able to get working rights in your target office

It may be easier to try to target a project in the new office being based in your current one, create relationships and then do the full transfer. However, that also depends on the company and office.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

Generally speaking, BCG want to keep you where you were hired. That being said, you can achieve a transfer via 3 routes. Ultimately, you will always need a strong pull for a permanent transfer. Here's how it generally works:

  • Short term: Project work (several weeks/months) in target office is the easiest option. Good to meet people and make an impression on Partners from target office who can help you transition further down the line
  • Medium term: Office loan/experience abroad to target office (MBB sometimes offer this for 12-18 months). Limited spaces if offered at all, tied to certain season/performance criteria. Good to really get to know people from target office and often turn into permanent placement.
  • Permanent: You can pull off a permanent transfer straight away but it's not very common and depends, among other things, on how much pull you can create from Partners you don't really know.

Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck!

Hi there,

It's do-able but tough. Luckily you're going the “easy” direction.

Ultimately, you just need to be upfront with your needs, and emphasize that it is for family/personal reasons.

Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed and transfers are hard to make happen. They are especially hard to make happen when you have just joined.

Ultimately, you need to build a strong reputation (do great work, be well-known for good work, and network internally). Then, you need some patience, timing, and open discussions with HR.

Remember though, possible doesn't mean probable. You should be mentally prepared for this to not happen.

Hello!

Yes, for sure, as long as there is no visa drama (as the ones you have in the US, for instance).

It´s important to first show a strong performance so you have a team in the London office that backs you up in the move, as well as to stablish connections with the final office so they support the move.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Clara

Should be possible with 1-2 years of good performance, BCG India offices have been growing rapidly and are always in need of talent.

Thanks Ashwin
