Hi,

I applied to McKinsey the day of the 15th October deadline with my friend.

My friend has heard back for a first round yesterday and I have not yet. However, I have mentioned exceptional circumstances in my cover letter / socioeconomic situations and I'm not sure if this is why it's taking longer than it should to reach back with a result.

Does anyone know if invitations are sent out at different times based on application circumstances?

They say final date is 3rd November when we hear back but I don't understand how the process works internally.

Thanks

Hi there,

I feel your anxiety, I really do! I’ve been there and know what it’s like… Here’s my take on your situation (and that of so many others in this forum):

CONTEXT: The simple answer is that someone will always have to go first and someone will always have to go last, which is sequenced more or less arbitrarily or for reasons unrelated to performance. They gave you a deadline that’s still in the future, so you’re well within the limits.

BOTTOM LINE: There’s nothing productive you can do aside from not looking at others and trying to stay positive.

Hang in there. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Moritz

Hi,

If the final date is November 3rd I don't understand why you even bring this question up :)

Obviously, they can not check all the applications at once, some are checked earlier, some later. If you and your friend applied at the same time it does not necessarily mean that the applications will be analysed at the same time as well. There's always some randomness to it.

Moreover, instead of stressing out about the things you can't control, such as the application outcome, it's better for you to keep applying to other firms and continue polishing your case fit interview skills.

Good luck!
Nick

Hi there,

I completely understand your worry/concern. That said, there is nothing you can do.

I know it's easier said than done, but no about of worrying/stressing is going to change anything.

Rather, focus on that which you can control. You should be networking with and applying to dozens of other firms. You should be case prepping agressively. Spend your time/energy on this NOT on wondering about an interview.

Note: You are not our of the running until Nov 3 happens. They may have just not looked at your resume yet, or they have yet to find a slot for you, or, they rejected it. We don't know! (But it's not over yet)

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst!

Hi there,

Just wait until the deadline and don't overthink. McKinsey recruiters are screening thousands of applications these time of the years and yours might be still in the to-do pile.

You will receive an answer once your application has been reviewed (either positive or negative, McKinsey doesn't ghost candidates).

Best,

Alberto

Hi, I submitted my application as graduate also for London. I hear that if you did not receive an invite last week from McKinsey office, you are rejected. They say I will receive the rejection email after the deadline. Someone told me that this is normal to happen in past years because all interview slots are given a week before deadline. I don't know if this is true and I want to ask you if this is true. Thank you!

Try not to read too much into this.

They don't necessarily evaluate all applications at the same time or send all the answers at the same time.

For now, no news is a good news.

Try to stay positive.

In the meantime, keep on applying to other firms to diversify your risk. You can leverage the following guide on the sort of principles you should keep in mind to develop a solid application strategy:

Hello Cristian, I want to ask: If people are receiving their invitations earlier like last week, does that mean their interviews are first on the calendar (first week of November) and then people who receive their invitation later do their interview later (second or third week of November) or does everyone do it at the same time. This is something I am worried about because it means that I get less preparation time than they do. Thank you!

No, it doesn't necessarily mean that. You can align with HR on a one-to-one basis for whatever time works for you and them.

Not uncommon, depends on how interviewers get together to debrief. Stay calm. Best of luck! Freddy
