Dear PrepLounge community,

I am new to consulting and just received an invitation for a 30-mins phone screen for a boutique consulting firm in the U.S. Should I prepare for mostly behavioral questions ? Any tips would be appreciated!

A screening call could either be:

  • Call to understand your motivation with fit questions and/or provide information on the process/position to be sure you are aligned. Fit questions usually include the following:
    1. Tell me about yourself
    2. Why consulting
    3. Why us
    4. Why hire you
  • Case interview. Usually the case is shorter than the standard ones you will have later on in the process.

If you didn't receive additional information, you can clarify the exact format with HR.

Importantly, know why you're interested in the firm, what your goals are, and be ready to talk about yourself.

The best thing you can do is practice with someone! Nothing beats having someone “throw you off” with unexpected questions so that you can just learn how to react to whatever comes your way!

Behavioural questions like “why consulting” and “why the firm” could be asked. Boutiques typically specialise in a particular sector or a function (e.g. Delta partners specialise in telecom industry, Simon-kucher in pricing strategy) so would be good to be prepared with questions related to interest in respective sector or function
