I got offer in corporate strategy role with MNC company. I am MBA and career switch without consulting experience (except internship).

What do you suggest to prepare before entering the office? Currently, I plan to work on following for next 1.5 months:

1. Financial analysis modelling - > my friend in other industry told me not important in corporate strategy since they have dedicated financial division typically

2. Excel and powerpoint

3. Industry and the company analysis

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer!

I agree with Pedro that knowing well the company/industry seems the most important point in your case.

Possible activities you may consider are:

  1. Learn about company and industry on your own with self-studying
  2. Organize networking lunches with current employees (ideally alumni of your university) to learn more about your employer

I would expect your current skills in terms of ppt and Excel should be fine given you had internships in consulting and come from an MBA – if not you can do a quick review.

Below you can also find some tips for the first weeks I usually recommend – you are probably familiar with most of them, but could be good to review:

  1. Take notes during meetings/discussion with your manager – this will help you to remember details and will show you care about them to the team.
  2. Always double-check. The first impression is very important when you join a new company: if you show you are reliable from the beginning, you create a reputation of a reliable person. Double checks should be done on expectations for your job, your Excel analysis, your slides – basically everything.
  3. Define priorities before starting any set of tasks. The majority of the results usually come from a subset of activities – this is true also for your tasks in consulting. You have to identify which they are and prioritize them – the application of the so-called 80-20 rule or Pareto Principle. Alignment on priorities and expectations is particularly important with your manager at the beginning of the project.
  4. Socialize with your colleagues and start to build a network. You should build a good network within the company. A good start is key to develop good relationships long-term. More difficult to do during COVID – but there may still be opportunities for virtual gatherings. Try to take advantage of as many as possible to build connections.
  5. Organize your private life activities. You want to organize your calendar to leave some space for personal activities (sport/ friends/ family). This is not easy but can be managed if you organize well, and long-term will be critical to keep a balance between work and private life. Also, it is better to align with your manager/teammates from the beginning on your core needs, so that there are no surprises later on.
  6. Ask for feedback every two-three weeks – this will show you are proactive and willing to learn.
  7. Ask for help when you don't know what to do – better to let know you are in trouble with meeting a deadline than missing the deadline.
  8. Be social and respectful with the support staff – these people are great and influential as well in the company.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, I would advise you not to focus too much on financial modeling and Microsoft Office considering that you already have worked at all. In case you feel you did not have a lot of practice during your MBA on these skills - which I would personally find rather irritating - you might still have a look at the most common keyboard shortcuts, for instance.
  • Moreover, given that a corporate strategy role requires you to become a true company and industry expert in short time, I would advise you to invest most of your time on finding out as much as possible on how the company and the industry dynamics are composed. For instance, you can read about the industry in analyst or consulting reports and find out more about the company in financial reports, company presentations and in informal conversations with your future colleagues.

In case you want a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your upcoming career entry, please feel free to contact me directly.

I hope this helps,

Hagen

Hi there,

Honestly? I think you should kick back, relax, and get bored before you join. Get everything out of your system.

Once you join, you are not going to have nearly as much free time - take advantage of it while you can (whether that's traveling the world of binge-watching Netflix).

There will be plenty of time to learn while on the job.

Now, if you don't want to do that, then I would study/learn Excel, PowerPoint, the major industries, and anything business, communication, and presentation related.

Your main focus should be on learning about the company and the industry. In corporate strategy, to become a strong performer, you need to become an industry expert, and that takes a long time. More specifically you need to understand what are their different business units and markets, and how they creates synergies from each other (corporate strategy is about realizing synergies out of a business portfolio).

The earlier you start learning about the company and the industries in plays in, the better.
