Hi all, 

I see many background check questions and I have one :). i Was working for a distributor handling  a portfolio then joined the manufacturing company as part of acquisition and still doing exactly the same job, handling the same portfolio. 
 

On the CV, I didn‘t mention it as distributor thing and then acquisition, I wrote that I am working for the manufacturing company as I am doing exactly the same job. Everything is the same 

Do you think this is something I should be concerned with?

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the (presumed) offer!

This is indeed an interesting question which is probably relevant for quite a lot of users, so I am happy to provide my perspective on it:

  • Generally speaking, I would advise you not to worry about such details for the following reasons:
    • First, you have most certainly attached your references which might already indicate that there was some M&A activity going on.
    • Second, if you are now employed by the manufacturing company, you are not lying and moreover, it is not your responsibility to display the whole M&A history of your employer. Even if I might be exaggerating here, otherwise, every BCG consultant would need to write something like "Consultant - BCG (spin off from Arthur D. Little)".
    • Third, in most countries, personal rights do not allow past employers or universities to disclose much information about you besides the fact that you have worked/ studied there. As such, the background check is rather superficial and should mainly detect blatant lies.

Hi there, how it works during background check is this:

Once you receive the offer, you will be contacted by a 3rd party background check company who will ask you to fill in all the information including education history, employment history, etc. Then they will call each party to confirm whether what you filled in is true.

So for your case, as long as the HR of your current company is willing to confirm your job title and employment dates, you will be fine :)

My worry is about possible miscommunication. If th 3rd party called my current employer asking for employment date, and the HR didn’t mention the acquisition date, it could be misinterpreted as a lie. Will they at least come back to me to explain if they found an issue?

That shouldn't be an issue. If there's any inconsistency, they will come back to you and ask for additional supporting information - and in that case you can provide the explanation you just give which is perfectly reasonable.

Not a biggie, so dont worry too much. But in future make sure you are absolutely tight on such things and are 100% consistent in your CV and wider application.

Thank you. My objective was just to make the CV simple as possible, and avoid reader confusion, especially that I have the same responsibility and doing exactly same tasks.

Genuinely there's no cause for concern! This is just an internal job change so to speak and you did the right thing by keeping the resume simplified. You should be just fine :)

This should not be an issue. If they ask for clarification you can explain the exact situation and you should be fine.

To avoid any possible issues, in the future you can mention in the CV that you were working for distributor XYZ so that there are no misunderstandings.
