Hope you're well. I've learned a lot from your advice on Prep Lounge. Quick question: Do consulting firms verify internships during the post-offer verification process? Your insights would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Many do! Normally it happens behind the scenes. As long as you were honest, you should be fine.

Hi,

Some firms might do this - but fundamentally I would question why this is even a concern for you.

Don't put in your CV an internship/experience that you didn't have - that is a lack of integrity.

Hi Benjamin, actually I have a peculiar problem. I did my full internhip and got my certificate of completion. But, I have lost that certificate and I am bit confused. How do I go with the verification process or how does i work??

Benjamin on Aug 22, 2023

If needed - you could always reach out to the previous firm and ask for a new certificate, if that is requested by the consulting firm. If you've already got the offer this is not something to really worry about. If you've not yet got the offer, then better to spend your effort preparing well for the interviews

Hello,

Some do, some don’t. I saw your comment about the lost certificate of completion – if you actually did the internship, you shouldn’t hesitate to put it on your resume. If the consulting firm asks to see the certificate, you can just reach out to the previous firm to ask for it. The only point where this is a problem is if you’re putting an internship on your resume that you didn’t actually do.

Usually they ask you for information on where you worked before and let a background checking specialist firm do the confirmations - usually they won't be asking you any proof, unless they cannot confirm your information or find innacuracies.

Hi there,

Q: Do consulting firms verify internships during the post-offer verification process?

They could verify every work experience reported. However if what you wrote is true there is nothing to worry about.

Best,

Francesco

Hi there,

You can asssume that it's more likely that they don't.

Still, they sometimes do background checks or ask for recommendation letters from past employers.

So even putting aside your own code of honour, it still doesn't make sense to be dishonest in the application.

If you're soon applying, sharing with you a guide you might find useful in terms of how to put together an application strategy:

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

short answer - yes, you should always be able to verify work (and academic) experience you put on your CV.

If you lost your certificate, suggest you just reach out to your old employer and request a copy. Alternatively, can also get a good reference from your former boss. Should usually not be an issue.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Andi
