Hello -

- How likely it is to hit 50% of the performance bonus for Post-MBA at MBB ? what is the average % for on-track performers? I am assuming only top performers hit 100%? - US offices

- does participation & working in groups (like being parts of diversity groups) or participating in studies and publications help boosting the performance?

Hey there,

Performance in consulting is generally measured on a bell curve. Hence, 50% of consultants of the firm are expected to be on track and receive 50% of their bonus.

An equal amount is above that and below that with the extreme cases of 0% and 100% being very very rare!

The biggest components are

  • your performance on the engagements (measured in different buckets such as analytics, client communication, leadership, etc.)
  • everything else you do on top of that (e.g., recruiting, interviewing, proposal writing, supporting research projects, etc.)

Cheers,

Florian

Hi there,

Your bonus is essentially tied to your performance on projects, so it's best to focus on doing really well there. 50% bonus would probably be the norm/standard whereas 100% is very hard to do.

This well and truly depends on the company, office, time period, and project contexts.

My advice? Worry much more about whether you're doing a good job and on track for up-not-out slash promotion. Work hard because you either want to do well or have to in order to do well. At the end of the day, bonuses are a nice way for firms to get cheap labor (the extra hours needed to get x% bonus generally aren't worth it).

Being part of diversity groups does not improve positioning in ranking.

However, being part of groups in general and contributing to internal initiatives in the firm does.

Most consultants get the 50%. It's targeted to the average performance.

While doing non-project work can help you in getting a higher %, what you really want is to have a great performance in projects. This is what really makes people want to work with you, promote you, keep you happy. If your project work is average or mediocre there is no ammount of non-project work that can help you.

So you only really want to spend a relevant ammount of time in those extras if you already are doing well in your projects.
