Part-Time Investment Banking

Are there part-time oportunities in IB for students in places like London, Madrid or Frankfurt? I have heard the terms "Werkstudent" relativelly often in the DACH region, specially Germany (much more than in Austria or Switzerland), but I don't know if it is a common or at least existing practice in IB. If not, are there similar oportunities in Big 4 Deals, or elsewhere in finance?

Thanks!!

There are such opportunities even in finance and IB, though, where though you would need to figure out on your own. It would be worth starting from the local websites of these firms and then perhaps having a chat with the recruiter.

However, for Germany at least, the expectation is that you are fluent in German to be in such a role. So depending on your language abilties this might be an issue.

Hey there :)

Part-time roles in investment banking are extremely rare, especially in London or Madrid, since IB is very full-time and client-driven. In Germany, Werkstudent positions exist mostly in Big 4 Deals, corporate finance teams, or corporate treasury/finance roles, they’re a great way to get exposure to financial modeling, due diligence, or transaction work while studying. Outside of Germany, part-time finance roles are mostly limited to internships or student analyst programs rather than ongoing part-time positions.

best, Alessa :)

Hi there,

Part-time roles in IB are pretty rare, especially in places like London or Madrid as most banks prefer full-time interns because of the steep learning curve. In Germany though, Werkstudent positions are more common, especially at Big 4 firms and sometimes in smaller investment boutiques. If you’re looking for hands-on finance experience alongside studies, those could be great alternatives.

Never heard anything like that before, even in Asia.

Also for what it's worth, any part-time role isn't really going to give you a credible experience or value-add that much.

i.e. there are "part time" analyst roles in consulting (e.g. PTA in China), but they are really glorified research assistants/grunt workers and are not viewed the same as a full-time internship.

Hi,

not uncommon. I see them more so in Germany. At BB rather uncommon but smaller shops and also Big 4 Deal / Transaction teams do have these kind of roles.

Many times these roles are filled after successful internships - essentially people stay on part time but you can also find them outside of this set-up. Note:In DACH you will need to speak german for most if not all roles.

Best,
Lukas
