Usually you can think of increasing batch size when you want to improve the efficiency of some operations (e.g. transportation or time to produce each piece).
It's not one of the most common solution, and there are some downsides connected to this to be considered.

Hi, in my work (with a CPG firm which follows batch production), we decide on batch size from the following perspective.

a) Manufacturing costs

  • To increase Productivity (utilization levels of equipment and line balancing)
  • To decrease idle costs (batch chageover idle times and batch changeover material waste)

b) Inventory costs

  • Given inhouse warehousing space and constraints for all product mix
  • Given units of storage (no of products in a box, no of boxes in a pallet, no of pallets in a warehousing shelf)

c) Outbound logistics costs

  • Utilization of truck (or train or ship container) space and hence, transportation costs per unit

Usually, the increasing of the batch size increases the system capacity (# pieces produced / unit of time) but increases throughput times (time that a piece stays in the system, from first to the last machine).

You usually want to increase batch sizes at bottlenecks (so that their utilization increases) and decrease batch sized at non-bottlenecks
