13 years in tech data engineering manager to consulting?

Question

Hi,

I worked for companies like Amazon, comcast and s&p global as data engineering manager.I feel like the space we are exposed due to org structure is narrow , mostly towards implementation.

I want to look at business more towards strategy and product point of view and in tech, i get bored frequently because the nature of work sometimes is mostly maintenance..and dont enjoy it anymore.

So i want to pivot to consulting at this stage in my career by doing an executive mba from top ivy school.

Is moving to MBB from tech with EMBA possible? Did anyone make similar switch?

what would be other areas i can target post EMBA?

Hi Merla,

You mention things like engineering, implementation, maintenance etc., which is McKinsey Ops language.

I was part of that practice in McKinsey and it was amazing! They hire people from all areas, so long as they have experience. Ops consultants are often in their 30s when they start with >10 years under their belt. Once inside the firm, you can also do strategy projects or whatever else you're interested in. The important thing is to get in!

Absolutely do-able.

The best way to make this happen is to invest in yourself, using your income from these firms. Get a coach to support you here.

To pivot you'll need to rework/reword your resume. You'll need to network extensively. And, there are some experiences you could add to the resume to make it more attractive (e.g. experiential consulting programs).

an EMBA is definitely a good option: but you might want to try to get into consulting without it first. IF you get in, great, you've saved yourself a few years and $100k+! If you don't, then, sure, go the EMBA route.

If you're worked in tech for such competitive brands, you need absolutely nothing else to transition into consulting.

Don't do an (E)MBA for this. Only do it if you want to close personal developmental gaps.

What you need instead is a good application strategy, starting with having a clear goals about what firms you want to target (and role, geography, timeline) AND a personal story (that will inform how you present yourself through your CV and Cover Letter).

Hi!

Doing an (E)MBA with a Top school is a possible way of transitioning to Management Consulting for you, but it's a huge time / money commitment. Also, in today's consulting market, even a top MBA does not guarantee you will be invited for an interview.

Another possible route for you is transitioning to a Tier2/Tier3 consulting company that carries out projects in your area of expertise (such as IBMx or Accenture) and then switching to a Tier1 company within a few years.

The eMBA is really not a typical route for entry into consulting. So I would suggest that you try with your current experience.

Shape up your application and network to get a referral - this will be more powerful than an eMBA.
