Opportunity Assessment: Alternative Revenue Streams for a Salt Mine
Salty Boy Inc. is an underground salt mine in Texas whose new leadership are supporters of the circular economy. Circular economy provides a pathway towards more sustainable production and consumption patterns – CE introduces circularity to many areas of production cycles and encourages using renewable, regenerative inputs (e.g., energy) and minimizing systematic leakage (e.g., waste). After decades of extracting salt form the earth, Salty Boy’s new leadership find themselves in possession of a network of empty, temperature and moisture stable tunnels located conveniently near major fiberglass waste sources and logistics networks. As a result, Salty Boy sees the potential for an alternative revenue stream. Their rationale is that they have ample and well-located storage capacities in their tunnels that they could use to position themselves well for an emerging recycling trend that could turn fiberglass waste into an eco-friendly and valuable raw material. Salty Boy is looking for your help to assess this potential opportunity.

Business Strategy: Home Delivery Solution for Retailer Chain
Kadara, a privately-held US retailer active in the Midwest with annual sales of approximately USD 3 bn, is trying to figure out a solution to last-mile home delivery. The company currently operates out of 100 brick-and-mortar stores selling primarily groceries and home essentials (e.g. paper towels, diapers, blenders). They also sell all non-perishable products offered in their stores through their website. Currently, all sales from their website are delivered via 3rd parties (e.g. FedEx, USPS), picking up products from regional distribution centers, and their minimum delivery time is next day. Kadara does not have out-of-store delivery options but they know that services such as Instacart and Postmates are being used by customers to arrange home delivery of groceries. Kadara's management believes that they are, at best, leaving money on the table due to their limited home delivery options and, at worst, at risk of being de-selected by customers as they move towards delivery options. Kadara’s future CEO, the granddaughter of the founder, has jumped on the chance to move the company into the future. To that end, she has developed a recommendation to Kadara's board to buy Dallas Drone Technologies (DDT). DDT designs, manufactures and operates small-to-midsize flying drones. Their initial models focused on aerial photography but they added goods movement capabilities about two years ago. The future CEO believes that drone delivery is key and that Kadara should buy DDT for USD 100 m to become a leader in the space. Kadara's current CEO would like your help specifically in evaluating the option to buy DDT and generally in how to think about home delivery and the future of their business.

Commercial Feasibility of Natural Gas Pipeline
A large natural gas field is unexpectedly discovered on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. The gas can be accessed and produced relatively easily and is of good quality. Europe, and especially Germany as the largest gas consumer in the EU, is looking for alternative gas suppliers to reduce its one-sided dependence on Russia. An initial market study has shown that stable demand in Western Europe would allow for around 10 billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas per year from the new gas field to be sold on the European market for the next 25 years. To achieve this, however, the gas must be transported to the important Western European gas hub Baumgarten in Austria. Several large oil and gas companies sense a business opportunity here and are now asking themselves whether it is economically feasible to build a corresponding gas pipeline from Corsica to Austria. One of these companies has approached you as a consultant to provide your assessment.
