Does feedback means rejection?

    Feedback rejection
Most recent answer on Jun 27, 2021

Had 3 interviews with a Tier 2 firm in a rapid two days for a senior consultant or consultant role as I have some working experience of a year+ (not sure if this is just 'first round' of interviews or if this is the entire process).

Really want to be part of the firm and love the culture. I thought at least 2 of the 3 interviews went well. Had a mistake on the last interview that I rebounded from but may not be enough. I still think overall things went well. But who knows, could just be candidate feeling it went decent and didn't see that realistically it went badly due to nervousness or being in the moment.

HR sent me an email, scheduling time to talk about feedback.

I know in MBB this certainly means a rejection. Is that the case in Tier 2 as well?

Hi there, I promise you this doesn't mean anything one way or the other way - we really won't know until you get the call! I know this is easier said than done, but please try to not to worry about it until the call ... (read entire answer)

    Rejected After Recruiter Outreach

    Recruiter rejection
Most recent answer on Apr 21, 2021

Hello,

Background: I applied to a MBB firm. Recruiter reached out asking to chat about role. I replied accepting the opportunity to chat. Same day, I received an automated application rejection email.

My question: What are the next steps here, as it applies to this firm?

It seems highly unusual. Ultimately I would like clarity, but I also don't want the recruiter to cut off communication if they learn my application was rejected. What's the best approach?

Can you clarify whether you mean an internal recruiter from that MBB or an external one (i.e. head hunter). If the former: there's nothing you can do about it. It would seem they have vetted the application and forme ... (read entire answer)

What should I do to get beyond CV screening at MBB?

    PhDtoConsulting recent graduate rejection
Most recent answer on Apr 18, 2021

I am a recent PhD engineering graduate from a top school (batch 2020). I have been in top schools throughout with top grades/publications and have had well demonstrated analytical as well as leadership skills throughout my academic life. Resume is written impact oriented (yes including numbers and action verbs), cover letter includes a quick dive into targeted qualities (analytical, leadership and driven) with demonstrated examples, along with touchpoints on my motivation in pursuing the firm.

Applied to Bain internship, got rejected (saying large number of applicants, basically the generic rejection email), applied to full-time consulting position as an APD (in BCG)-got rejected (again generic email saying-impressed by your achievements, your profile does not match our current needs etc).

Right now, I'm in strongest phase of my case cracking. What can I do to get that interview?

Thanks!

How to learn from McKinsey final round PEI-based rejection?

and Bain BCG Final Round MBB rejection final round McKinsey McKinsey Final Round rejection
Most recent answer on Feb 28, 2021

Hi everyone! I was rejected by McKinsey after the final round. I respect the decision, but I am trying to figure out what I could improve to stand a chance with other companies and in general learn from the experience. I find this to be a bit difficult, because the rejection was based on PEI.

According to the interviewer my performance on the cases/quantitative problems was very good, but in one of the PEI questions (team conflict/convincing someone to change their view) I didn't show how I was able to be empathetic/put myself in other people shoes and influence their behavior in the long term. I regret not using another example that would show my empathy more explicitly. Maybe there were other reasons why the interviewers decided I wasn't a good fit, but the one I described was quoted as the reason behind their decision. If anyone may have any insight I would appreciate it a lot!

Hi Tabitha, I will give my input based on my experience giving final rounds at a tier 2 firm as well as my own experience moving to MBB. First of all it's important to take official feedbacks with a grain of salt. ... (read entire answer)

    Rejection of an Application

    Cover letter CV screening rejection
Most recent answer on Feb 28, 2021

Hi everyone, Recently, two of MBB firms rejected my application and didn't invite me to the first round. 1. How can I know what was the main reason for the rejection? I have a BA in Economics in a well-known university in my country in the middle east where MBB are doing recruiting events every year), average grade (82 out of 100), significant experience in the public sector and in my opinion CV and Cover Letter well-written. I assume that there can be a lot of reasons that don't depend on me (office needs, authorization to work in Europe, etc.) but how can I know what should I improve or upgrade? 2. In a case like these, do I need to wait 12-18 months until I can apply again? Thanks in advance

Hi, 1. yes, different reasons, depending also on the office hiring moment. Feel free to send me the CV for a feedback. 2. yes, you have usually to wait 12-18m. Things you can do to accelerate it is building a strong int ... (read entire answer)

Hi, I was not shortlisted for the interview with Bain even with a referral from a Partner. I don't understand?

    Referral rejection
Most recent answer on Feb 16, 2021

He was my college alumni, I connected with him on Likedin. We had a great chat, he himself asked me to let him know when I apply so that he can talk to the recruiting to put in a word. Once i submitted the application, I let him know and he mailed back telling me that he would talk to the staffing immediately. However, after 5 weeks of waiting, I got a rejection from the recruiting team. I am confused. I applied for Associate Consultant position. There are no apparent red flags on my CV: GMAT - 700, Decent GPA not extraordinary, previous experience working in consulting projects.

Rejection from a Partner Interview Without Feedback

    Final Round rejection
Most recent answer on Jan 20, 2021

Hey team, I had my first partner interview with Oliver Wyman last week after 3 rounds with Managers/Principals. I thought it went pretty well and the Partner mentioned before wrapping up that he is looking forward to seeing me with the firm.

I received a few days later a rejection email from HR without any feedback. Would it be okay to email the Partner directly and ask for feedback?

Thanks!

Rejected 2nd time. What can I do to increase my chances until next year?

    improve rejection
Most recent answer on Dec 30, 2020

Dear community,

Unfortunately, this year I was rejected by McK at the CV screening stage. Last year, I passed CV screening, rejected after the Imbellus game. This year after graduating from my master's in the UK and improving my CV based on extensive recommendations from different people on this platform, I was rejected. I was hopeful since I've received much positive feedback on my CV.

Anyway, I guess due to COVID-19 most job opportunities are now lost and competition is stiff. I've been rejected from all other companies I applied to, including other consulting companies, tech, banks, and even other not-so-well-known ones (A LOT). Now, I am tired of applying and lost my hope. I left with one chance - to go back to my previous employer as an operational risk management specialist at Central Bank.

My question is what can I do until next year to improve my chances? How a Central Bank experience is perceived by McK?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear that you've been having a hard time. My best advice for you would be to make sure you are getting relevant feedback from people who are familiar with your geography and background (e.g., are you applying i ... (read entire answer)

Rejection After Final Round Interviews BCG

BCG Final Round MBB rejection final round rejection
Most recent answer on Dec 30, 2020

I found out today that after my final round interviews with BCG I did not get the offer. The feedback I got was that they were not convinced of my business judgment and I needed to work on my final recommendations. I am very disappointed but the process assured me that this is what I want to be doing. I want to work on these skills and reapply but I don't know how to go about working on improving my business judgment or improving my final recommendations any more than the work I have already done on them. Is there any advice on how I can work on these skills and improve as well as how to get over the disappointment? I'm having a really hard time getting in the mindset to focus on moving forward.

Bain BCG Interview MBB McKinsey reapply rejection
Most recent answer on Nov 30, 2020

Hey everyone,

about 2 years ago, when I had just finished my second year of university in Germany, I applied to all big consulting companies and was invited by nearly all of them because I had good grades and consulting experience from a previous internship.

But I failed most of the cases due to a lack of preparation (1. Consulting Internship didnt requiere case study in interview process) and because I thought I could handle all of this without problems.

Now 2 years later I want to reapply, but there is always one big question in my head: "How many opportunities can I get?"

I still have 2 years of univeristy in my Masters Degree to go (just started) and therefore have plenty of time left.

In case I fail an interview this time, is there an opportunity to apply for a third time or is a second application already the last opportunity at the big consulting firms?

Thanks for the answers

No offer after interview - apply again later?

Case Interview full-time Interview MBB McKinsey Personal Fit rejection
Most recent answer on Nov 26, 2020

Hi everyone,

today I had my 3 interviews for an internship at McKinsey in Germany. I am still a second year undergrad student so I was already surprised to get an invite. Unfortunately I did not receive an offer for an internship.

I really enjoyed the day and the feedback was positive as well. The personal fit was there, but in some situations they had the feeling I was not structured enough during a case and could not argue why I took certain numbers.

During the feedback I asked one of the interviewers about the option to apply again later with more experience. He thought that this is no problem, but could not provide any details and told me to ask HR for more information.

But because we have friday now, HR has weekend and I am really curious, I wanted to ask you about your opinions or experience with this topic? Are chances smaller than?

Thanks a lot

Repeated rejections for consulting - action plan?

    Advice guidance isthereanylightattheendofthetunnel? rejection
Most recent answer on Nov 24, 2020

I got my resume reviewed by a few consultants at MBB and they said I had a strong resume. However, when I submit my resume for consulting roles, I never get shortlisted for an interview. I have applied over 2-3 windows and don't know what I need to do to strengthen my application anymore.

I graduated from top-tier schools (both undergrad and masters) but didn't have a good GPA. I don't state my GPA on my resume. But I have a decent GMAT score, and all my academic scores prior to that have been great.

What should I do? I have done a lot of research on the industry and really want to work in consulting for a few years at least.

P.S - I am in the Asian market (Singapore and India) and have been applying for roles in these regions.

Hi, in this situation, I strongly recommend applying via referrals. I would try to contact all your friends and ex-alumni of your University now in consulting (with LinkedIn it is very easy) Best, Antonello

Rejection from BCG with pre-approved CV

    BCG rejection
Most recent answer on Nov 23, 2020

I applied to BCG ten days ago (UK rounds 2018). My CV had been screened by one of the consultants and I'd been actively encouraged to apply. I have a perfect GPA, undergraduate + graduate degree from target schools, have held several leadership positions, am a competitive sports player, speak several languages, and have a year of experience with one of the largest international organisations in the world.
I am very, very surprised that I didn't make it through the CV screening, especially with a CV approved by one of their consultants. Could anyone point me towards some potential factors? Or the next steps?

Thank you

A disappointed applicant

Last chance at MBB - failed 2 already. How can I maximize my chances at the last MBB?

    Feedback improve Interview MBB rejection
Most recent answer on Nov 17, 2020
Anonymous gave the best answer on Apr 29, 2020

Hi all, I need all the expert opinion I can get. I don't want to sound like a sob, but I've been feeling a lot like consulting isn't for me (after dreaming to be in the consulting industry for x years since undergrad).

I've already failed two first interviews (at Bain and at BCG). I have a standing application to McKinsey (passed the PST, waiting to be scheduled for the first interview in the next few months). I have a feeling that chances are, I'll be failing this one too. Let me describe my experiences in the first two interviews:

BCG:

- totally bombed the first case (unusual case problem - setting a goal for a PE firm)

- aced second case (profitability problem at a telecom)

Bain (after 4 months):

- aced first case (growth strategy at an insurance company)

- did okay on the second case (acquisition, consumer goods)

I did not receive feedback from BCG, but I asked feedback from Bain and what they said was that I though I had good energy and am insightful, I lacked in structure and in driving the case. To be honest, I was a little bit surprised by the interviewer-led format at Bain. How do I work on these weaknesses (structure, drive), given that McKinsey will also use an interviewer-led case style?

I'm also planning on paying for practice sessions here on Preplounge, and on asking my Mckinsey acquiantances for practice (both of which I haven't done before - and again to be honest, I haven't done live case practices for the first two interviews). What else can I do, and how do my chances look?

Dear A, I would recommend you to learn from your failures and practice, practice, practice. There is no other way to success. Best, André

Rejected by BCG during CV screening - reapply to a different office?

    BCG office rejection
Most recent answer on Nov 17, 2020

Hi all,

I have recently applied to a major Continental European office with a referral and top grades from a top target school. Rejected after final round at MBB (Bain), need advice for trying again

Advice Bain Final Round MBB reapply rejection second round
Most recent answer on Oct 31, 2020

Hi everyone,

I wanted some advice on next steps. While I did not receive interviews from McKinsey and BCG, I recently did my final round at Bain and was rejected (I executed on the cases at ~65% of how I usually perform due to a few factors).

My ultimate goal is still MBB and I was wondering if anyone could weigh in on the best path there. Some options I'm considering are:

Tier-2 consulting (Oliver Wyman, Roland Berger, etc.)

Tier-3 consulting (Big4 non-Monitor etc.)

F500, rotational programs

More specifically, likely CPG (think Kraft-Heinz).

Additionally, B-school after any of the aforementioned options

Anything else you all might recommend

As well, what is general process is for reapplication? It seems there's a blacklist period? I was also considering writing to my interviewers and asking for more direct advice RE: reapplying and RE: what roles I should pursue to set myself up properly.

Thanks everyone.

Most recent answer on Aug 31, 2020

Hi,

if someone gets rejected by one of MBB in one country, he gets "blacklisted" for the next 1.5-2 years as far as I know. But can he still apply for the same company in other regions within this time? For instance, if a person gets rejected by a McKinsey US office, will his application for, let's say, McKinsey Middle East still be taken into consideration?

In other words, are the blacklists of MBB shared across all offices worldwide?
