I am going to start working at MBB in a few months as a post-MBA recruit.

I want to keep networking with people in the firm, but I have a few questions:

1-Should I wait for my  firm-issued email account to be created or is it a better idea to keep using my current email address? Would partners be more likely to answer to a coffee chat request from inside?

2-Is it a better idea to focus on people in my office or is it OK to reach out to people from other offices? I am asking this because a couple of partners/practices that I am really interested in are located in other offices.

3-Should the contents of these chats be any different than the ones that I had before getting the offer?

Appreciate any insights

Woohoo! Congrats to you!

First, make sure to read this (both before and during your role): https://www.preplounge.com/en/articles/tips-for-consultans

In general, you can start networking once you join. In that instance, use your firm-issued email.

2-Is it a better idea to focus on people in my office or is it OK to reach out to people from other offices? I am asking this because a couple of partners/practices that I am really interested in are located in other offices.

TRUE networking is building a reputation for yourself. TRUE networking is the same as making friends in life - the most natural and less pushy you are the better. Just make sure as you go about this, you're doing it the “right” way and approaching it as building long term relationships. Join practice groups. Attend events. Work on many projects and do good work. This will all flow naturally!

3-Should the contents of these chats be any different than the ones that I had before getting the offer?

Hi there!

Congrats on the new role! Hope you'll enjoy it.

Let me take your questions one by one.

1-Should I wait for my  firm-issued email account to be created or is it a better idea to keep using my current email address? Would partners be more likely to answer to a coffee chat request from inside?

Yes. You're going to have a significantly better success rate on answers to coffee chats when you're inside the firm. So rather wait for the firm issued address.

2-Is it a better idea to focus on people in my office or is it OK to reach out to people from other offices? I am asking this because a couple of partners/practices that I am really interested in are located in other offices.

Focus primarily on those in your office. It's important that you build a relationship with them to begin with. Then selectively reach out to people in other offices that you believe you have a special interest in.

3-Should the contents of these chats be any different than the ones that I had before getting the offer?

Well, the questions that you'll ask will change. I'd really focus the discussions around you just starting and wanting to know what it takes to be successful and what advice they have for somebody who is just starting.

Then if you're connecting with Partners who do projects in an area that you're really interested in, telling them you're interested and available for staffing in that area.

Sharing with you also two articles that synthesise my learnings from getting started in consulting:

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Congratulations on the offer! In terms of your questions:

1) Should I wait for my firm-issued email account to be created or is it a better idea to keep using my current email address?

I don’t think this matters if you say you are joining soon.

2) Is it a better idea to focus on people in my office or is it OK to reach out to people from other offices?

I don't see issues with reaching out to other offices if you see a connection

3) Should the contents of these chats be any different than the ones that I had before getting the offer?

Most likely, because usually chats before offers are finalized to get referrals. Not sure what is your goal now, but I guess you might want to direct the conversation in a different direction.

Best,

Francesco
