McKinsey Rejection

Hi, this is the email I recieved from McKinsey as a rejection. When they mention keeping information on file, is this something which they say to be polite or some something they actually keep and potentially get in touch with a candidate in the future?

"Thank you for your application and for expressing interest in discussing career opportunities with McKinsey & Company.

After careful consideration of your application, we have concluded that we cannot proceed with your candidacy for the Consultant  position at this time.

Despite this decision, we would like to keep your information on file for possible opportunities with us in the future.  If you are not interested, please feel free to let us know.

We regret the disappointing news, but wish you continued success with your career endeavors.  Thank you again for your interest in our firm."

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about this and I have to agree with the others - if you're hoping for a future call-back this is highly unlikely.

That said, dust yourself off and get back on the saddle!

Identify why you didn't make it, fix it, then apply to other companies AND apply to McK in 12-24 months.

The greatest accomplishments come from temporary defeat!

It is very unlikely that they contact you again. Put your hopes on reapplying again within 12 months.

Sorry to hear about the rejection. It happens to the best of candidates. It is very rare that they will contact you in the future. Where I have seen this happen is for specialist roles that require deep industry or function  knowledge.

Best,

Udayan

Just a survey - has no impact on your application process

I'm sorry to hear you got a rejection. I think this is a standard thing that they say, unfortunately. I recommend to keep applying for other jobs, and re-apply to McKinsey in the future if you wish! Best of luck.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the rejection.

This is a pretty standard rejection email and I would not expect that they will call spontaneously in the future. However you will be able to apply again after the ban period.

Best,

Francesco

Hey there,

Unfortunately, this is purely out of politeness. Yes, they keep your information but they won't reach out again in the future.

BUT, after the ban period you can apply again.

Whenever you (re)-apply after a failed application (screening, aptitude test, or interviews) you need to make sure to show significant development in your resume since your rejection. Assuming you want to be hired straight out of university this means

  • New academic achievements (e.g., new degree, top of class achievements,...)
  • Experience abroad (career or university)
  • New job experience (internships, working student, project assistant,...)
  • New extracurriculars (leadership experience, NGOs, student clubs,....)

Usually, you are banned between 12 and 24 months from re-applying. Referrals can help both

  • shorten that time
  • increase your chances for a new invitation to the interviews

Cheers,

Florian

The way I see it - you have 2 things to do:

  1. Do write to HR and clarify whatever questions you have (including the cool-off period)
  2. If you want to try again then do reapply yourself after the cool-off period is over. It is unlikely to get a response autonomously.

I have a follow-up question on this thread. I saw my application closed on the Dashboard without receiving any rejection email/letter. Does someone have experience in that regard? I heard Mckinsey never ghosts applicants. But clearly I got rejected wihtout any notification. I don't know what's going on.
