Just did the Mckinsey Solve Game (January 2025) - got some questions/insights

I just completed the McKinsey Solve assessment, which included the Ecosystem, Redrock, and Ocean Cleanup games. I wanted to share my experience and ask a few questions regarding the technical aspects of my performance.

Ecosystem Game:

  • I began by selecting the range with the highest calories to start my ecosystem. However, I noticed a red flag, so I restarted with a different setup, which worked successfully (all 8 species survived).
  • When selecting the location, the cards for producers and animals only displayed 2 monitoring factors: depth and temperature. I had seen in videos that typically 4 factors need to be chosen. Since the instructions mentioned selecting "up to four," I decided to choose the two provided. Have I missed something?

Redrock Study:

  • The questions were clear, with minimal data noise. Some required longer calculations, especially in the cases, but they were manageable.
  • I reached the final case with three minutes remaining. Since I had been averaging 1/2 minutes per question, I estimated I had enough time. However, the last case contained two questions, each requiring 4 separate inputs, so I was unable to finish. Could this final case carry more weight due to the higher number of required inputs?

Ocean Cleanup:

  • The game was fun, and they had tutorials which were clear and helpful. I hadn't seen any videos of this game beforehand, but was simple to understand.
  • I was tasked with identifying the best combination of microbes for 3 sites (35 minutes)
  • For the first 2 sites, I successfully identified three microbes that matched both the quantitative range and qualitative attributes.
  • For the 3rd site, I also found the correct combination microbes, but just at the moment were I was clicking 'submit microbes' a time's up page came up.  I'm unsure whether my selections were registered. Could my answers have been disregarded due to this?

Overall Experience:

  • The process was long, but engaging and fun! :)

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the progress in the application process with McKinsey thus far!

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your questions:

  • First of all, no, you have not missed anything. Some ecosystem management situations seem to have 4 environmental factors to consider, others only 2.
  • Moreover, unfortunately, no one can seriously answer how any aspect of the McKinsey Solve pre-interview assessment is weighted.
  • Lastly, again, no one can unfortunately seriously answer whether or not your inputs to the ocean treatment game up to this point will be counted, and if so, how. But you've done your best, and now you have to wait and see.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming McKinsey interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing your experience! Regarding your questions:

1) Since the instructions mentioned selecting "up to four," I decided to choose the two provided. Have I missed something?

Normally you have 2 factors in the cards in the sea environment and 4 in the mountain one. So this looks fine.

2) Could this final case carry more weight due to the higher number of required inputs?

Possibly. It is unclear how the cases are weighted where there are multiple inputs required.

3) Could my answers have been disregarded due to this?

If the pop-up appeared before you clicked, it is likely that the final answer was not recorded.

Good luck!

Francesco

Hi there,

Regarding the pop-up at the end: While the input was not recorded for the product score, it's likely that they still received your input as the Solve also monitors every move and input you make.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Florian

Hi! Thanks for the feedback! Could you please let me know if the email invitation for the test mentioned an approximate duration of 70 minutes (+20 minutes for the rules) or more than 100 minutes?

Hello! The mail mentioned 70 minutes. Due to this I thought I would only be getting the ecosystem and redrock but it seems it's not related.

Thanks for sharing your insights on the McKinsey Solve assessment! It sounds like you navigated the challenges well, especially with the Ecosystem game. I can relate to the pressure of time constraints; I often find myself in similar situations while playing games like geoguessr free. Hopefully, you get clarity on your submissions!
