Private equity can absolutely be worth it, but it really depends on your priorities. The hours are still long, especially at the associate level, though generally not as extreme as in investment banking. That said, if you're expecting a relaxed 40-hour workweek, PE won’t give you that.
One of the biggest differences is that the work tends to be more strategic and long-term. You’re not just executing deals but also helping build companies. The compensation can be very rewarding over time, especially if you stay long enough to earn carried interest, but it takes patience, and the pressure is always there.
Whether the work-life balance is better than in banking depends on the firm and fund size. Some smaller or more specialized PE firms do offer better lifestyles, while large funds with heavy deal flow can feel just as intense as IB.
The key question is whether you see yourself in investing and company-building for the long haul. If you do, PE can be an exciting and lucrative career. If balance is a bigger priority, there are other roles, like asset management or corporate development, that offer similar challenges with more flexibility.
