Better Move before T-15 MBA

career Career Advising career choice Career choice suggestion consulting Energy Energy Consulting insurance MBA MBA Application Advice
Most recent answer on May 07, 2021

Hi! I've recently got offered two entry-level positions that I am currently contemplating about and hoped to hear some guidance and advice before making my final choice.
My goal is to move on to a top MBA (M7, T-15) about 5 years later and to possibly make a transition in to MBB or Tier 2 (OW, S&, Big 4) Consulting soon in my career. I've wanted to learn which of these choices would better position me to achieve this goal.

1. Energy, Sustainability Consulting in Tier 3 Firm (Think ZS, Guidehouse, Huron)

2. Strategy, Risk Consulting at Top Insurance Brokerage Firm (Think Marsh, WTW, AON)

I do like the topics of energy and Insurance very much. Energy I think is a topic well-positioned towards the future and Insurance has been a strong sector that also has large potential due to the increasing level of uncertainty within society.

The one concern I have is that, I might be getting too specialized in a certain industry at too early of my career. I'm worried that this might hinder the possibility of getting into a top MBA and transitioning my career in to MBB or Tier 2 consulting within my future.

I'd love to hear any advice regarding the choices I should make and hope you have a great day!

Hi there, First, congratulations on both offers! You have a good problem to have. Now, the first point I would make is: How could you not specialize? Any role you take is technically specializing! Don't get fussed u ... (read entire answer)

Hi experts! I really hope to get some career advice from this forum.

I have 2 summer internship offers: 1) LEK in London (8 weeks internship with ~100% return offers); 2) P&G in Geneva, Switzerland (European HQ) as Finance/Strategy intern (3 months with also ~100% return offers).

What would be the factors to consider in choosing between the 2?

For context, I'm a penultimate year undergrad in London, and my objectives are:

- try to join MBB after graduation

- get an MBA (possibly sponsored)

- later break into VC/Private Equity.

Thanks a lot! :)

It's about long-term stability (both career and work-life balance) vs. Short-term hard work and quicker climbing th corporate ladder. Some info on P&G to help you decide: I interned at P&G a couple of years ag ... (read entire answer)

Need a bit of a suggestion about Masters vs Mckinsey

BCG career advice career choice career opportunities master course McKinsey
Most recent answer on Mar 16, 2021

Hi. I am in a unique and privileged position. I have an offer from Imperial Business School (Masters not MBA) and Mckinsey (Inisghts and Capability Analyst). However, I am not sure which one to choose, so some suggestions would be nice.

Background: UG in electrical engineering. 27 years old, 3 years of work exp (1.5 in a startup,1.5 at FAANG).

Why Mckinsey: Wanted to work at Mckinsey but sincr I am from a non-target school, I was rejected twice for the BA role. I have heard if you do well at work, they let you switch to the BA track.

Why Imperial; Top 5 business masters. However, as a non-EU non-native English speaker, finding a role at MBB might be tough since the competition will be LSE, Oxbridge and LBS.

Possible scenarios: Mckinsey--> MBA

Imperial--> MBB experience--> MBA (if it demands)

What are your thoughts?

As mentioned already by others, choosing to work in Insights & Capability with the hopes of switching to the BA track is misguided advice... it's also worth realising that if you were to join McKinsey in a Insights ... (read entire answer)

I don't speak the local language now, would going to a big-4 advisory for 3 years and learn the language a good detour?

Dear experts,

I'm from a European business school (a target school for MBB) but don't speak the local language. I was already lucky to get a referral from a partner and now interning at a big-4 transaction advisory. I love my team a lot and they are always willing to teach me new things like some data analytics tools or some good practice. Recently my 2 managers approached me to extend me a full-time offer and encouraged me to specialize in data analytics and learn python, etc. The company is willing to pay for my language courses and would probably make an exception for me to start from now. I'm very very thankful for this result halfway of my internship, however, my only concern is that if this would shut the door for me to get in strategy consulting after 2 to 3 years.

I clearly understand, without speaking their local language, I won't get into most consultancies anyway. Further more, I’m already the exception as being the only intern who doesn’t speak the local language. Even though I want to get into strategy consulting, I don’t want to be greedy and I know good results take time. So I would assume the options in front of me are as following:

- Stay in my transaction advisory team (no risk) and seek for a change (for sure) when my language skill is ready, hopefully in 2 to 3 years;

- Apply for some English-friendly in-house consulting firms (results unsure) and seek for a change/or not (might stay if the team is good) after 2 to 3 years.

(*Some addition to my background: Accounting bachelor, Accounting and Finance Master, cross-continental study and internship experience, 2 years of internship and startup experience including one in a management consultancy and one in M&A)

It would be really nice if someone of you could explain on my concern and it would be even better if you can share your thoughts on the 2 options I listed or add more options for me to consider.

Best regards,

Anonymous

Dear A, I'm very much familiar with your situation. Good friend of mine also had the same situation, when she moved to Germany after MBA without speaking German language. It's always recommendable to stay where you cur ... (read entire answer)

Money now vs. BCG on my CV

    career career choice career move
Question edited on Oct 20, 2018

I am a lateral hire / experienced professional.

I have received an offer to join BCG as consultant.

However, accepting the offer will mean a salary reduction of about 30% (in comparison with my current job, based in a different country with a better taxation).

Will it work if I ask them to increase the proposed gross salary?

Should I stay in my job (technical expert) instead?

Congrats on the offer. 30% is a lot of money, so o definitely understand. Still, I want to make sure you place things in perspective: - First, the salary at BCG will increase at >10% CAGR. In 2 years after the next ... (read entire answer)

Head of Staff: CEO office or associate at McK/BCGBain?

BCG career choice CEO consulting Corporate MBB McKinsey or
Recent activity on May 03, 2018

Hoping for some advice, although I know the answer to my question is very subjective and not simple.

I just became an Associate in the Digital practice of one of the top three consultancies. I really enjoy "Digital" and I feel I have a lot to learn here still - at the same time I am on path to be fast-tacked into Engagement Manager / Project Leader.

Very recently, I have was fortunate enough to have be offered a role called "Head of staff: CEO office". I am not very familiar with these roles, which is also a reason why I ask for advice.
But apparently, the role consists of "following the CEO", attending meetings and advising/briefing the CEO before meetings as well as implementing strategic initiatives as you would in any other corporate firm. The role seems interesting because you basically, at my level, get as much (very) senior exposure as you can - I suppose. At the same time, the firm is a approx. a 1-2 bn dollar firm in revenues with very healthy profits and is owned by a PE firm --> which makes it more interesting I believe. It is also somewhat of a tech firm, which is a hard requirement for me personally.

Questions:
What would you do? Where do you think you learn the most? Pros and cons as you see it? How do I best evaluate my choice?

Thanks.

Hi Anonymous, Interesting question. I believe it completely depends on where do you see yourself in 3-5 years, how much you want to keep options open vs specialize early and on the actual growth opportunity of the PE ... (read entire answer)
