I am at a target school and will be interviewing with Kearney Middle East in a week. This is my only shot and I want to do well. I was told that questions for Middle East tend to be different. can anyone advice on the kind of questions and also if anyone has a database of ME sample prompts and is willing to share? What should I focus on and what advice do you have for me to maximize my chances.

Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on the invitation from Kearney!

I think this is an interesting question that may be relevant for many people. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it:

  • First of all, please keep in mind that in strategy consulting, there are global recruiting guidelines that must be followed, and there is a lot of exchange between regions, countries, and offices, both in terms of information and consulting staff. As such, based on the experience of my coachees and my personal network, I cannot identify any noticeable differences between the case study prompts at Kearney in Dubai compared to any other office.
  • Moreover, while chances are high that the clients in the case studies will most likely come from any of the dominating industries in the region, I would still highly advise you to practice case studies of various industries and capabilities.
  • Lastly, the only aspect that increases your chances and is under your control is thorough preparation. Based on the information provided by you, I would highly advise you to consider reaching out to an experienced coach about at least a preparation plan, if not the preparation itself.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare for your upcoming interviews, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen

Hi there,

Lots of useful answers below.

It's very important not to assume or expect anything to be different just because of the region.

Best,
Cristian

Hi there,

Everywhere is always different but in unpredictably different ways.

What does this mean?

Interviewer x in middle east is going to be differnet to interview y in middle east. They may be more different to each other than inteviewer z in New York.

Please stop trying to predict things.

To maximize your chances, learn how to approach any case type.

There are infinity case types and prompts. But, learning how to solve any of them is not only the best way to solve them but also quicker than trying to memorize everything (which is impossible).

Learn the HOW, not the WHAT.

By the way, I do have a database. Even though this is not the right approach, I'll humor you and provide you 2 real questions asked by Kearney UAE 2 weeks ago:

  • Should our client enter the UAE telecoms market? BE must be within 3 years and the only competition is a state run telecoms company
  • What is the market size of the UAE telecoms market?

And, if I were a betting man, I would bet $100 these are not the questions you will get.

To my knowledge the case questions in the ME are not substantially different to anywhere else. That being said, you should research which industries Kearney is strong in in the ME and be prepared to do cases in those industries.

I suggest preparing for the case as you would do for anywhere else, so get comfortable creating strong structures, interpreting charts and leading an interviewer through quantitative math questions. A good place to start is with the case library here, and then consider investing in a coaching session with someone who can determine which bits need the most focus from you and suggestions of how to specifically target those areas.

Good luck!
