Lateral generalist hiring in McKinsey (India)

Hi,

I just had a connect with a Mckinsey partner according to whom McKinsey doesn't do lateral hiring for generalist profiles in India. Your only option is to either go for expert profiles or apply though target schools.

Did anybody knew about this practice? And what can we do if our dream is to target general profiles in MBB (I am assuming other 2 will have same policy)

Well - whilst that's largely the case, I have seen a few colleagues laterally get to other consulting companies (e.g. Kearney) and then move to Mckinsey on the generalist/integrative track. Its certainly not impossible if you happen to have a spike in your profile. Happy to chat more directly.

Best,

Snigdha.

Broadly seems right to me….there are exceptions to this rule - most notably getting a referral from a senior partner or a big client. Those 2 can help get a role. But you still need to have a very strong profile in terms of where you went to college and where you currently work.

If that is not an option then an MBA from a top 8 program in the US is the next best option to work in MBB in India.

Hi there,

Adding a different perspective to this.

If your dream is MBB general profiles, you have a better chance for lateral hiring in the Middle East.

Could be an option.

All the best,

It doesn't apply 100% of the cases, but you'll need to have something where you really excel to stand out from the crowd.

As such, the best option is to apply abroad (typically middle east, but south east asia could also work) and later on try to move back to India.
