Can I apply for different position after rejected?

If I had applied and got rejected for "A" position at McKinsey, can I apply for "B" position at McKinsey right away? (i.e., not waiting for several years because the position i applied is different from the last one)

If yes, will they ghosting me? Or they will still consider it and will inform me regardless if the result is rejection or moving to next stage?

Yes, you can apply for a different position (B) at McKinsey after being rejected from another (A), as long as it's a truly different role (e.g., Generalist vs. Expert Track, Implementation, or Internal roles).

A few things to keep in mind:

  • There’s no strict firm-wide cooldown if the roles are different, but some offices may still flag your prior rejection, especially if recent
  • If you're applying soon after the first rejection, make sure your new application clearly fits the B role’s profile
  • They should inform you of the outcome. McKinsey typically doesn't ghost candidates, but it may take time if they're filtering out based on prior applications

What if I get rejected for Associate and I re-apply for Business Analyst? The rejection I'm talking about is CV screening rejection

If you were rejected at the CV screening stage for Associate, and you're now considering applying for Business Analyst, here’s what you should know: 1. Yes, you can reapply for a different role, especially if it’s a better fit for your background (e.g., less experience or no advanced degree yet) 2. Firms like McKinsey do track prior applications, but they don’t automatically reject you for applying to a different role, especially if the new role aligns better 3. Make sure to adjust your resume and cover letter to match the BA role expectations; don’t submit the same application that was rejected 4. If possible, try to get a referral or brief endorsement to strengthen your reapplication Bottom line: You can definitely reapply, but make it clear that you're targeting a more appropriate entry point based on your current experience. And always aim to improve your application the second time around. Best of luck! Let me know if you would like to get some support.

No, you can't.

The freeze applies for a year in most geographies.

If you are considering applying, reach out to the respective recruiter and discuss it with them. Explain your motivation for apply to a different role.

Aside from this, it might be better to start looking into opportunities at other firms.

Best,
Cristian

I'm not talking about different office location, I'm talking about different role in the company. Will they still inform me even if it is rejection again? I'm just afraid they don't inform me at all.

Hi there,

As far as I've observed in McKinsey, if you are applying a different position (same position in different offices doesn't count), it is usually ok. I've seen folks who got rejected for a generalist role and got in as a knowledge-based role (e.g., knowledge analyst). Caveats apply but hope this gives you a general sense of it.

Good luck!

Han

Hi,

To answer your questions:

If I had applied and got rejected for "A" position at McKinsey, can I apply for "B" position at McKinsey right away?

Short answer: No

Regardless of the phase of the interview (I saw in the comments you said this was a CV phase) your details will be flagged that you were rejected.

There should be a cooling-off period which differs per office before you can reapply (but varies between 6m and 12m normally).

I recommend you contact the HR/Recruiting team to find out about the period.

But before you apply to any role, maybe you need to look at your CV and tweak it and ask yourself - what in my CV got me rejected?

The same stringent reviews will be in place for any role at McKinsey that you apply for be it internal roles (finance, HR etc.) or specialist track (digital etc.)

Will they ghost you?

The short answer again: No.

McKinsey tends to communicate rejections, even an automated message is communication. If there is a delay, it is likely due to a backlog.

Good luck and happy to chat.

Hi,

From a BCG perspective, you can apply to a different role, but it needs to be fundamentally different. E.g. if you fail the generalist interview you will not be interviewed for the expert role. It needs to be an ops role or knowledge team.
