I am currently in the process of applying to MBB and not coming from a target school in London

Hi PrepLounge,

I am currently applying to MBB in London and did not attend a target school.

Graduated in June top of class while working full time at my FinTech seeing it through first selling to EQT in 2020. Top performer at the FinTech having had both commercial and strategy roles.

I however worked full time in a FinTech while still finishing top of class. I have spoken with quite a few candidates internally and continue to go to networking events. Anything else I can do to get through the screening process?

Additionally, I am getting referred at BCG and also Bain. Any advice for standing out more than what I am doing?

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your question:

  • First of all, I think you are already doing almost everything you can in order to perfect your application.
  • Moreover, you might consider getting the help of an experienced coach like me to have your application files - both resume and cover letter - polished to perfection.

You can find more on this topic here: How to succeed in the final interview round.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on how to best prepare your application, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hi there!

It really sounds like you are doing everything you can in terms of networking - all great ideas and measures, so I am expecting it to get you quite far.

The only other thing is how good your CV is. You will need to use each single point there to show how you are a top performer in your field and why that would make you a great consultant.

If that is done, I think you could rest assured you've done your best!
When I got into consulting, I had very similar background: non-target school (more like no-name) and what looked like a very normal corporate job. But the fact that I have completed a full time masters degree on top of my job weighted quite a bit (it showed determination + honestly ... that I can work the long hours :) I did have to "work" extra hard to prove in my CV and then later in interviews that I was a top performer in my otherwise generic sounding job.

One last parting advice: I would recommend you to also apply to smaller consultancies with offices in London (e.g., OC&C is actually doing some really good work + I hear they have a very nice culture). If nothing else, it could be at least a good stepping stone into consulting.

Hope this helps,

Ariadna

Thank you very insightful! I see you are at BCG - I will try my best to get through the screening and ace the case if I get so lucky.

Hi there,

I would suggest a couple of things:

  • Your profile could definitely be interesting for MBB. As regards the non-target school, filter on LinkedIn for people with the same school who work at MBB to understand your chances and maybe connect with them for more insights
  • Make sure that your CV and cover letter show you in the best possible light. Ideally, you have a professional coach look over both and provide you with detailed feedback
  • Mid to long-term: If MBB does not work out right away, consider tier-2 firms as well, stay for a bit, and then move up.

All the best,

Florian
