Chances at MBB/T2 with Low Undergrad Grades but Target Master's?

Hi all,
I’m currently pursuing a Master’s degree at a European target school (think Oxbridge, LBS, HEC, INSEAD), but I completed my undergrad at a top Australian university with a relatively low GPA — roughly equivalent to a low 2:2 in the UK system.

I’m looking to apply for MBB and Tier 2 firms in London or the Middle East and was wondering:

  • How much my undergrad performance might hold me back, given my current school?
  • Whether the Middle East might offer a more feasible entry point than London?
  • If firms outside of MBB/T2 would be more receptive to this kind of profile?
  • What steps I can take now (e.g. strong academic performance in my Master's, test scores, networking) to strengthen my chances?

Appreciate any advice — thanks in advance!

Hi There,

Look, I recently spoke with  Mckinsey recruiter and the feedback that I received is that for entry level roles , they are looking for excellence in one out of three areas: education, internships or extracurriculars. So choose one and make it excellent, you can definitely compensate your masters grades so long as they are excellent.

I got an offer from McK London a while back and what is important to know is that on one side you are competing with people from everywhere in the world including Insead and Ivy League so it is very competitive. On the other hand, business has slowed down due to Brexit so they might be hiring less.

Middle East is an excellent choice so long as you either have a connection to the region or are able to informally network to senior people in these firms so that they can hear your case.

If you need help to strategize the application or network with these firms, please chat me.

Hey there :)

I coach many candidates with similar profiles, and the short answer is: yes, your undergrad grades might raise a flag, but your Master’s at a top school can absolutely offset that, especially with strong performance. For MBB/T2 in London, competition is intense and undergrad GPA does matter more, so the Middle East could indeed be a more accessible entry point if your story fits well with the region.

Outside MBB/T2, firms can be more flexible if you show strong motivation, a sharp CV, and great interview performance. Focus now on excelling in your Master’s, aim for a strong GMAT or relevant test score if possible, and network a lot, referrals can help override GPA doubts. Own your story, and show growth.

Best,
Alessa :)

Hi there,

A Master's from a target school can offset a low undergrad GPA provided that the rest of your profile demonstrates the leadership skills and mindset that MBB firms are looking for. The same goes for firms outside MBB

The London hiring market is a little tricky at the moment, meaning it's even more competitive than normal, but it's still possible to secure an offer with the right preparation. The Middle East is certainly feasible - even more so if you're able to network and secure a referral.

To your last question: I would focus on nailing your Master's (ideally graduating with honours of some kind), finding internships with strong brand power, and participating in extra-curriculars which demonstrate strong personal leadership qualities.

I have seen (and interviewed) plenty of profiles similar to yours, so let me know if you want to chat.

Actually, grades are starting to matter less and less, especially in Europe. In the US, as part of campus recruiting, they still seem to matter more.

What you should emphasize instead in your application are your CV, CL and referrals. These are all things that you can still control and improve and they will influence how likely you are to pass screening.
