Deal advisory mini cases - investor longlist

Deal all,

I have an upcoming interview for an internship in the deal advisory department with a focus on M&A at KPMG. However, I am not sure what kind of “Mini cases” I should expect (topics)? Moreover, I was told one of the topics could be how an investor longlist is created. Yet, I cannot really find any reliable information with the exact steps on how investor lists are created? It would be great if you could help me out with the steps and especially where the investors are found (databases or how do advisors look for investors?)! Thank you very much!

Best,

Emma

Hi Emma!

This does sound like a job for a coach. By meeting with a coach for even an hour you're going to get a much better feel for all of these questions.

In terms of mini cases, while I'd normally say “be ready for anything”, you don't have time for that right now. Additionally, since you're applying for a specialist role and it's at one of the accounting firms, I think you're safer focusing on just M&A and deal advisory topics

The best view of these topics is going to be…from your role description and the company page! The things they have already worked on, plan to work on, and are hiring you to work on, are a pretty good guess!

Example:

Happy to help via coaching (where we would walk through a series of mini-cases + brainstorming questions on likely topics)

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the help! However, coaching is too expensive for me, so I only would need help with the investor longlist and the steps, which is why I asked that specific question... So any help would be much appreciated:)

Hi there!

It's great that you're reaching out here.

Basically, I'd do 2 things if I were you (aside from the obvious one of googling for examples of questions)

1. Network with people who recently went through the recruitment process for Deal Advisory at KPMG and who are in a similar role seniority-wide. Aim for people who have around 1 year tenure. They will be most likely willing to help. Ask them to give you a better understanding of the interview, how they practiced for it and where they found practice materials.

You can connect with them via LinkedIn. This article explains how:

2. Get yourself expert support if you are committed to get the offer. A great coach will do drill with you that are similar to those in the interview. This is the most efficient and effective way to get a clear understanding of what the expectations are and how to ensure you are ready for the interview.

Hi Emma,

Topics-wise, I would work through cases that deal with M&A to get a feel for the types of questions you might be asked. Plenty of case books separate cases by topics, so you can pick the M&A ones out of those pretty easily.

Regarding the investor longlist, your best bet would be to reach out to someone in the industry to ask. I would use LinkedIn to find people working in M&A (unless you have been explicitly instructed by KPMG not to do so), reach out saying that you are interested in getting a job in the field and would love to learn more about the work, and ask for a quick call, during which you can ask for guidance on the interview process and investor lists.

Hi,

Happy to share a couple of quick pointers on investor longlist creation - I worked in BCG's Principal Investor & Private Equity practice and have created a few investor lists before for both private and public investors.

Just drop me a dm!
