Applied for an internship with McKinsey but I've already graduated. Will they reject it automatically?

Hi everyone. I have applied recently for a Business Analyst internship with McKinsey (a Middle East office). I didn't notice that they need someone who is strictly graduating between 2025-2026 until after I've sent my application. My graduation date was December 2023. I don't have any contacts at the company so I cant ask this question internally. Shortly after the application, I received the Solve invitation. I got a 7th decile score at 511.

I am still taking on internships as I haven't had much luck finding full-time jobs yet. I was trying to take the advice from a mentor who suggested internships at MBB are a better option for recent graduates. I now realise this is totally false. I'm realising how much of a needless trouble I've put myself into, and it's genuinely depressing. I have these questions:

1. Will my application be rejected based on my graduation date?

2. Can I reach out to them to let them know I'd be interested in a full-time role as well?

McKinsey, like many firms, often has specific eligibility criteria for their internship programs, including graduation dates. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean your application will be automatically rejected. It’s possible that they might still consider your application, especially if you’ve already progressed to the next stage of the process (like receiving an invitation for the Solve challenge).

Here’s what you can do:

  • Review the Application Details: Sometimes the application process might have more flexibility than it seems at first glance.
  • Follow Up: If you’re concerned, you can contact McKinsey’s recruitment team or HR department for clarification. Explain your situation and express your continued interest in the company. They might provide guidance on whether your application is still valid or if you should consider other roles. snow rider

2. Can You Reach Out About a Full-Time Role?

Yes, reaching out to express your interest in a full-time role is a good idea, especially if you believe that your skills and experiences align well with McKinsey’s needs. Here’s how you can approach this:

  • Contact Recruitment or HR: Send a polite and professional email to the recruitment team or HR. Mention that you’ve applied for the internship but are also interested in full-time opportunities. Highlight your relevant experience and express your enthusiasm for working with McKinsey.
  • Be Clear and Concise: In your email or communication, clearly state that you have already graduated and are seeking full-time opportunities. Emphasize your interest in McKinsey and how your skills can contribute to their team.

Hi there,

Not sure what mentor told you this but McKinsey usually refrains from hiring for internship positions after people have graduated (the thinking is that they should have made up their minds about what they want to do professionally after graduation).

  1. It could be (in line with the policy) but it's odd that they invited you to the Solve Game so that's a good thing :-)
  2. Definitely tell them!

All the best,

Florian

Since you were invited to the Solve game you are in the process… they will look at your profile and if they either want you for their internship or full time role they'll let you know.

Most likely they will reject you for the intership role. They could invite you to the full time role, but I am afraid your Solve game result does not look promising.

Thanks for your answer. Just a bit curious, do you happen to know typically the cut-off point for passing the solve game in the ME?

Hi there,

I would be happy to share my thoughts on your situation:

  • First of all, McKinsey, like most other consulting firms, typically does not accept graduates for internship positions.
  • Moreover, I would highly advise you to reach out to the recruiting department and explain your situation, both to understand the situation about being rejected for the internship position and to express your interest in a full-time role.

You can find more on this topic here: How to deal with a rejection from a consulting company.

If you would like a more detailed discussion on your specific situation, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Best,

Hagen
